This PC looks pretty good for £500

My stepson asked if he could buy his own PC for when we move to Italy, as the 'kids' PC is in the step daughter's bedroom at the mo, and they're always arguing who should go on it - plus they do use it a lot for school related work.

Bad with a capital B! He asked about laptops, and I dissuaded him, as I can fix and upgrade a desktop PC, a laptop is another story.A base unit which already has a very good (but not the best) dual core CPU, 2 GB of RAM and a half decent budget GPU is much better than a laptop, for my stepson's needs, I think.
That's an incredible deal, the specs are fantastic, it's not a bad looking unit either and comes with a TFT screen that would probably retail in the high street for around £200 on it's own.
I've bookmarked it for myself, not yet ready, but if these guys can knock 'em out like this then it's worth having the details handy.

It's £300 off when you sign up for 2 years of Orange broadband isn't it?
So add about £480 on to the quoted price of £149; assuming it's the £20p/m one you're signing for. I've also assumed the 3 months half price is skipped, which is logical.
Not such a bargain if all you want is a cheap laptop; considering Orange/Freeserve/Wanadoo's past rep to be rather hit or miss I'm not sure it's such a bargain even if you are in the market for a laptop and ADSL.
looks a nice spec, got friends who have upgraded and 64 bit vista seems to be the thing to go for, ultimate appears to have difficulties

I have to disagree with most of you, I dont think it looks that great. The processor and ram are about the best bits, but 2GB or ram can be had for £50 nowadays. The Hard disk is only 160GB and the graphics card will not run most modern games at any resoloution worthy of the 19" monitor, which by the way can be had for much less than £200.

Unless you do a lot of video editing, or download large chunks of media files to HD, 160GB is more than enough for plenty of games, office software and MP3/WMA music files - so 160GB is absolutely fine.He wants the PC to help keep in touch with his mates in the UK when we move to Italy, play a few of his fave games, and for homework. I am stone cold sure this PC will excel in all of that - and I could not buy the seperate componants and make it as cheap, so, in my eyes, it is a bargain.
Sorry Chris with those requirements in mind you are of course right it will be more than fine. My worry is always that you pay a reasonable amount for a GPU like the 8600GT and then only upgrade it in about a years time, or less, because it was poor to start with. And 160GB is good for general storage but as you say in the future more may be needed if the computers is used for anything else, especially as games now take up between 5-10 GB.

Hard drives are no prob, have loads of spares, even have a pair of 74GB Raptor hard drives not doing anything at the mo!*- This is because when I built the HTPC, I intended to 'transplant' all componants from my work PC (which was being upgraded) into the HTPC, complete with the expensive Asus MN32 SLI Delux mobo, which dies on me. I then bought a very cheap 'stop gap' MATX mobo, which could only allow one SATA drive, due to the 7950 GPU covering the other SATA slot, so had to install a bog standard spare Samsung Spinpoint 250GB SATA drive instead. And the cheap as chips mobo is still working fine!
