Hi

Im thinking of taking my Griff over to Reims later in the summer (what summer rolleyes) and would be interested to hear if anyone can recommend a decent Tiv friendly hotel in the centre. We want to be in walking distance of bars and restaurants etc but it must have good car parking.

Also in terms of Champagne tours has anyone done the Laurent Perrier one? Is there such a thing??

Lastly is the old circuit at Reims open for general entry/photo taking?

cheers

Graham

The old circuit buildings are on a public road (D27) so are open all the time. The architecture of some champagne houses in Reims is very impressive, but the champagne itself was disappointing.

When Karen and I stay in the region, we tend base ourselves around Epernay. If you want an upmarket-ish place there La Villa Eugene is nice, although there's no bar (you'd have to walk into the town for that, but it's not far). The IBIS in the centre is cheap and convenient and the underground parking is fine. The Avenue de Champagne in Epernay has been dug up, so you have to walk it, but there's a good number of champagne houses on it. Moet and Mercier have good tours, but they're effectively museums. Nicholas Feuillatte (10 mins out of Epernay) gives you a better insight into how things are done these days. If you want to get the best stuff though, head out of the big towns and visit the villages where there small producers are.

Steve.

Not in a position to recommend any hotels, but you should be very aware that the few miles leading up to the peage tollgate on the A26 just north of Reims is a notorious spot for police radar traps. And just when you think you've got through the danger spot, they've rather unsportingly just started using radar traps on the sharply bending exit sliproad a couple of miles after the tolls. I use this road regularly on business trips and the presence of speed traps on both directions of the A26 has increased significantly compared to just a couple of years ago.

Been a few times in the Griff as it's a good stop off point back from the Cote d'Azur.

I like either the Mercure Cathedral Centre or the Holiday Inn Express. They are both very cheap with secure parking (underground at the Mercure - watch the steep slope!) and 10 mins walk from the city centre.

Have fun!

I believe you can tour the vineyards, but you need to arrange this in advance.

Champagne Laurent-Perrier
Domaine Laurent-Perrier
51150 Tours-sur-Marne
France
Téléphone : (33) 3 26 58 91 22
Fax : (33) 3 26 58 77 29

I would be interested to know how you get on, as this is one the champagne houses I would like to tour.

Neil.

Hi, if you want to learn about Champagne and how it's made go to Piper-Heidsieck and visit the caves in their small train.

You pay at reception for the tour and a tasting of brut, brut rose and millesime. When I went there I bought 3 bottle of the 1995 Millesime because it was very good indeed.

Not this time unfortunately - we went last September but that was when the last engine melted so ended up seeing the Vosges courtesy of a Peugeot 306 diesel!!

This time it will be Champagne tours and Reims circuit I think...

We stayed in Reims when we were in the Tamora, pretty sure it was the Novotel. I got surrounded by a coachful of Italians when I was cleaning the windscreen early in the morning - they were very impressed! biggrin

Me and Bebs from PH took the 360's to Reims and stayed here, underground secure car park right in the centre of town and very reasonable with a good bar and well priced bubbly.

Ask for EROL at the bar, or was his name JOHN wink, long story smile

And here some pics of the car park and Reims centre biggrin
