Belt slipping on 996?!
Discussion
Though i've just posted on another topic saying how well 996's do for everyday cars i've had a slght worry with mine yesterday. I have a 2002 996 Targa 3.6 and been travelling around the country this week with work so have done 1,500 miles over the last 4 days. The problem is that there is a whining noise clearly relating to reving up to around 2,000 - irrespective of if I'm moving or not. And reverse seems to be worse - i don't seem to be losing power or fuel efficiency. I did Brighton to Yorkshire yesterday and it was getting far worse so I stopped at East Sussex OPC and they had a 3 minute look at it (at which point it wasnt making any noise at all.. bl**dy typical!!). they told me that Turbo's and some normal ones can get a bit of moisture on the belts (and lets face it - its been lashing it all month) and that makes them slip a bit - but surely after a further 6 hrs in te car (traffic was a nightmare!) the engine would have dried it out - its still as bad as ever?! The cars done 33,000 miles in total - so a bit off the replacement cycle.
Has anyone had similar problems or got another angle?! cheers, in advance...

Right...! not sure what that is as i'm a numpty...is it something i can sort out?!
Yup, remove the water jacket from the engine with a disc cutter or similar. Fit a bloody big 12V fan in the engine bay, move all the instruments and switches to random locations in the cockpit and cut half way through your door check straps. That should achieve the same effect Right...! not sure what that is as i'm a numpty...is it something i can sort out?!

Back on topic..... Even on a long run it can still get pretty wet in the engine bay, let it dry out properly before you spend any money
Serious answer.
Check the Pentosin reservoir (top right of engine bay.)
If this is low then the power steering pump makes a noise. Try starting the engine and then using full lock on the steering. If it groans then that's likely to be the problem.
If it needs Pentosin fluid do NOT use anything other than the correct Pentosin brand. It HAS to be exact to prevent damaging the pump.

Vesuvius - thanks - you're spot on! Now...where do I get this fluid? I can go to an OPC i expect, but does anywhere else stock it?
OPC - it's hard to to find otherwise..........................If you have an OPC warranty call them, explain and tell them NOT TO SEND AN RAC MAN - they need a Porsche Technician who will carry it. When this happened to me (1300 miles after an OPC service FFS!) they brought me a litre and dropped it off at work f.o.c. after the RAC bloke tried to top it up with Halfrauds crap. He just about got away with his hands.....
Beware. It costs more than fine malt whisky

This is the stuff.

There's an equivalent which can be used, but it's Pentosin brand and says it can be mixed with 11S - this is the stuff which Porsche supplied me with - it specifically says on the can it mixes with 11S.

Make sure you get the right stuff.
Make sure you check the levels for a bit to ensure it's not a leaking rack or a pipe. Mine needed a quarter of a litre to top it up (total capacity is about 1.25 litres IIRC) and it's been fine since so no leaks. All very odd. Although I had caned it for 1200 miles in 40c heat just before I found the low level so maybe I boiled it off or something!!
Glad I could help. God bless PH when something makes a funny noise
