My father managed to get one that didn't need a tow bar - used a device that connects through the centre of the rear wheel on to the rear wheel carrier, very neat (and takes two bikes). Cannot recall where he got it though!

sounds lack just the job for me

seen one that Halfords do that looks as you describe

a bit concerned about a)being able to open the tailgate with the rack in place and b)how daft it'll look when not carrying bikes (not keen on taking the rack on and off all the time so it'd be a permanent fixture)
