Have looked at one today and it actiually drove a lot better than i thought it would. The car is on a 51 plate with 42K miles. I have 2 issues. One what is the turbo like for reliability and wear and tear and secondly, it does not have the r4 wheels it has the wide chromy 5 spoke?. Discuss and let me know what you think, The car is for my missus.

Is it the 225bhp version? My friend's mother had one, nice car with bose etc.

Personally I prefer the 5 spokes, bit different to the usual stuff.

1.8T reliability is excellent - only coil packs are sometimes an issue, and then very rarely.

Buy from an Audi dealer and the warranty will cover you anyway.

Best bet is a 225ps quattro roadster. quattro, 17" / 18" alloys, depending on age were standard. 17" "Competition" design alloys (the polished ones you mention) are fine - just watch for corrosion to the surface which is expensive to recondition. Also standard on the 225 were Xenon headlamps with wash, heated front seats, and electric hood. - BOSE 6CD, Cruise, Sat Nav and full leather are prized options ( an Alcantara / Leather option was no cost - although I like it in light grey) .

180 / later 190 quattro - standard kit similar except no Xenons as standard.

150ps 2wd is very popular, and still manages 0-60 in 8.5 secs.

If it was for my wife I'd consider the 150 - good economy and lower insurance, but cloth trim was the standard and no heated seats, and also came on 16" alloys as std.

Avoid Moro Blue, Papaya Orange, Olive Green, and non metallics like Amulet Red and Brilliant Black and you should be fine.

The alloys you mention are indeed the competition ones are were an optional extra on TTs before the 18" RS types alloys became standard. From memory they are lighter than the standard 17s.

Common problems are all electrical : I've had 1 coil pack go along with a coolant sensor and indicator relay - all fairly common but cheap/easy to fix yourself. The dash pods can go though and they can be close to a grand to sort out although I've heard that Audi will help if out of warranty.

The turbos should last well into 6 figure mileages. Only ones I've ever heard of going were in remapped cars (S3s actually not TTs)

Yup all good stuff.

Really we have to say there's not much to worry about.

The dash panel thing - Audi will assist with this on cars up to 5 years old with a full Audi history.

Incidentally the turbo and intercooler set up is different on the S3, with twin intercoolers. Haven't heard of any turbo problems that should put you off.
