997GT3 / GT3RS - is exhaust "sport" button easy to "mod" ??
Discussion
Guys,
On the 997 C2S and C4S the PSE exhaust could be configured to stay "open" all the time (rather than just when the sport button was pushed) by disconnecting a small valve actuator wire connector on top of the engine - literally a 20 second "fix".
Is it the same on the GT3 and GT3RS? Or is it more difficult?

On the new 997 GT3 I think the exhaust goes into 'open' mode automatically above 4000rpm, no way to turn this off.
The 'sport' button switches the exhaust to 'open' for the whole rev range, at least I'm sure that's what mine does.
Yeah thats the same as C2S and C4S - I want to have it open all of the time - irrespective of whether the sport botton is pushed! The 'sport' button switches the exhaust to 'open' for the whole rev range, at least I'm sure that's what mine does.
On the C2/4S you simply disconnect a cable and it defaults to OPEN - CAN THE SAME THING BE DONE ON GT3/RS??
Oficially there is no answer you will get from Porsche as the car meets specific type aproval for sound regulations. However,
There is a clip on the exhaust which when removed means the exhaust is open the whole time.
Im sure that an independant speciallist can point you in the direction of the clip, (open and peek inside the engine cover, the clip will be attached to the silencer)
Hey presto. Louder downshift blips.without loosing the rest of the sport button advantages.

Just unplug the plug from the top of the grey solenoid valve which controls the exhaust and then it will be loud the whole time. Looking into the engine bay it is on the right had side sort of top corner. It's a small ish grey block with a couple of vacuum lines going to it and a wire and rubber booted plug at the top. From memory there is a locking clip which needs to be pushed in and then the plug just undoes. Make sure you cable tie the wire and plug out of the way safely somewhere.

The connecting block can be seperated so that the exhaust valve stays open all the time. Quite happy not to disconnect mine as there are times when it's just nice to cover the miles and not get a migrane. On the 997 C2S and C4S the PSE exhaust could be configured to stay "open" all the time (rather than just when the sport button was pushed) by disconnecting a small valve actuator wire connector on top of the engine - literally a 20 second "fix".

The connector is beige/brown and cube shaped. It lives on the right hand side above the engine and is fairly easy to access.
The factory pointed this out to us when we collected he RS from Stuttgart.

Have you sorted this on yours Gary.....Only I'm having trouble finding said cube.
I have left mine in place as there are occasions when I like to drive in relative quiet!Off on the Titanic Alpine tour in the morning but send me an e-mail asap to GT3reg@aol.com and I'll send you a photo of said connector. (Not sure how to post photos on pistonheads and can't be arsed to spend time working it out right now).
The connector was pointed out to us by Andreas Preuninger (Porsche project manager for GT3) so it obviously doesn't represent any risk to the running of the engine etc.

This only effects the sound or also the "other" functions of the Sport button, like torque, ABS, etc.
Whatever it affects it doesn't make a really noticeable difference in driving performance and/or braking (in my opinion). Just means that it is not necessary to press the sport button every time the engine is re-started. Extra noise does make you think it's at least 100bhp more though...Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
