Police lights and the law
Discussion
I have seen this advert on PH:
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/206609.htm
I have seen these working on another car and they are very good
and am considering buying them for my car. As they are meant to be police issue I know that its illegal to use them on the road, but are they legal to use off-road/ car show use?

Out of curiousity, if you were pulled for a seperate incident (say even a random stop and check with no other violation) and an officer found the lights, would that result in a charge? I'd think so, but I'm just curious
As far as I'm aware, it's only an offence to use them improperly - not to possess them.Edited by Graebob on Sunday 22 July 14:25

The law is that they can only be only be used on an emergency vehicle, which is (amongst others) "a vehicle used for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes".So for an off-duty officer to use them it would depend on whether the use was a "police purpose". One problem is that only a uniformed officer has the power to order a vehicle to stop (although in practice this means that if a vehicle doesn't stop no offence is commited). Another problem is internal force policy - it may well be that if the policy prohibits something then the act might not be deemed a "police purpose".

Off road you can do what you like really. On it, only the police are allowed blue lights.
As well as ambulance, Fire Service, Coastguard, blood and organ delivery vehicles and mountain rescue.Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
