Hello - Newbie and fuel question
Discussion
Hello guys. I am from Washington State in the US (NW) and have had a soft spot in my head for British cars all my life. I just picked up an '86 Wedge and started having injection issues.
First the fuel pump died, due to ingesting a piece of rubber gasket material. Replaced that and put a filter in front of the new pump. Then the car wouldn't start following the pump replacement. The small diaphragm plunger in the warm-up regulator had seized - control pressure was too high to start. Now it runs very strong (for a wimpy 2.8L), but intermittently cuts out around corners and up hills - only after driving for 10 to 15 minutes...
Saved the best task for last - cleaning out the fuel system, oh joy! The new pre-pump filter has small bits of what look like black paint. So it's out with the swirl pot and likely the tanks.
Question (finally); what the heck is in the central swirl pot?? I know what it does, but I am puzzled because when I shake the thing, something inside is clunking around. Is this normal?? I can't inspect it without cutting the sealed can apart. I will likely make another, but am curious what hidden function may be inside...
thanks,
Scotty
