A mates 1995 X300 has been standing for a while, the battery had gone flat and now it won't start. I've fitted another battery and now have power back, but when you turn the key to the start position nothing happens. I'm guessing the key security code has failed. Anyone know of a diagnosis method, quick fix or a way round the problem?

If the original battery went dead then you will have confused modules, Try doing a hard reset with the new battery by disconnecting the negative lead for at least 2 minutes, reconnect and see what you get.

Can you hear the fuel pump when key is turned to position II? (under rear seat, sometimes easier to hear with an ear to the filler pipe).

Cheers T2

Tried hard reset with new battery twice and also checked F4 fuse in boot which supplies 12V to ingition module.

Intresting point about fuel pump 'tho, I'll check that out and try to get hold of wiring schematic. Problem is engine will not crank at all in start position, not crank and refuse to fire which to me would indicate ignition or fueling failure.

I'm guessing, but assume pump would run for seconds in position 2 to pressurise system and then stop once pressure was reached and engine was not subsequenty started.

Only other thought is that the start inhibit switch on the gearbox has failed and the box thinks the car is in gear when it's actually in P or N.

Simple way of telling whether or not your car is ' reading ' the ignition key. When you turn the ignition to position 2, after about 5 seconds the light test is complete. In the bottom left hand corner you have the orange ' check engine ' light, is this light is not illuminted the your car is immobilised, and will not start. If it is on, try wriggling the gear lever, as the park switch might be sticking. Let us know how you go.

Not my car fortunately - but it went to the scrappers several month ago, just not worth spending money on fixing and renewing the MOT. Shame maybe but it needed far more than it was worth spending on it.

Another old XJ bites the dust....
