At last. biggrin
Took it into a place with a reputation for knowing the engine in mine for a full diagnostic, which they did, and also diagnosed and repaired a melted pressure pipe from the turbo.
All done for a reasonable £60! smile

It's now more responsive and faster through all revs and gears and no more going into limp home mode either.

Yeah, it kept going into limp home mode, effectively switching off the turbo, eliminating throttle response and increasing fuel consumption.

It was very annoying in middle of overtakes, going up motorway hills etc, but I didn't want to take the risk of a big repair bill until I was working again as different people had suggested anything from an 'italian tuneup' with fuel additive(fun but useless), a new mass airflow sensor (£80 fitted),up to a new turbo being necessary (not going there...). It was cope-able though for running around.

I just thought it felt slow because the Mondeo had 130bhp, not because it was actually running with about (guessing)80bhp even in 'normal' mode.

SM - Found this site by accident - http://www.briskoda.net/ - looks like they have a help section on it too with genuine techs
