I fitted a new Lucas sports coil but the engine won't rev past 3,800 RPM, put the old coil back on today and all is well.
Could it be a faulty coil or not suitable for the Griffith, any ideas anyone?

I would take it back, explain the problem, make sure they know what you are fitting it, check its suitable, then hopefully get a free replacement. If the other one is OK why are you changing it?

Lucas make more than one variety of sport coil, so it may or not be suitable. When I bought a new coil ( which happened to be a Lucas Sport coil, but I just asked for a "coil" ) it happened to be no good ( car would not start ). After it was changed for one that worked, it was very good.
Interestingly, at the next MOT, the tester said "did you know you have the wrong coil fited?" I said "no I didn't know, what makes you say that? It did come from a TVR specialist ". He said "In that case, it may be correct. Just a lot of boy racers get these from the local motor factors here ( won't name & shame ) who have got a job lot of them and are selling them as a performance upgrade. Only, they don't pay too much attention to the diffent types, and half these lads are driving round with a coil not meant for that engine.

I wanted to upgrade to a higher voltage coil but it turns out that I need the electronic version, mind you it sounded like a Cerbera at 3,800rpm smile
