Driver side window died 1988 Esprit
Discussion
Hello again,
My driver side window finally died.
Could I use the passenger window switch in place of the drivers switch to check to see if it is the motor or the switch itself.
The window worked at first but you needed to wait a few minutes each time you pushed it. It would go up a bit then stop, you would wait a bit and do it again until you got it up all the way. Now it won't move at all. It figures it has to be the drivers side and not the passenger side!!
Any help please,
Larry

Larry,
Sorry to hear of your troubles. You can check the window, but also check the switch as these too burn out. But, it sounds to me like your motor is fried.
The good news is that we have cross referenced these to a GM part # Right side: 05045665
Left side: 05045664
They are $125.00 and $127.00 respectively and are listed as window motors for the '58-'78 Corvette.
When you reinstall, add a relay to each window up/down circuit to avoid having all the current running through the somewhat meager Lotus (Lucas) switch. People have bench tested these motors for amperage draw and found them to exceed 40 Amps! Also, if doing the relay upgrade, switch to a larger gauge power wire as this too will assist the current draw and make the motors run better and last longer. Hope this helps. Happy Motoring! Larry how did you get on?? I had the same problem in mine. We took the whole interior door panel off replaced the old switch with a new one, regreased the arm with roller in it for improved movement and now much better. This part was a little stiff so must have taken alot off pressure off the moter.
I was happy it wasn't the motor to replace this time.

Hi Jim, I think you are right about the motor. I will try the switch first since it is the cheaper way to go.
Hi Kylie, I have not got around to it as of yet but will let you know how I make out. Did your window show the same symtoms as I described?
Thanks Again,
Larry

A note on window motor replacement. I replaced the motor in my '90 Esprit. Not certain if I did something wrong but in the course of taking the motor out, the door opened much further than normal hitting the edge of the fender. Naturally, it chipped the paint. Seems that part of the window motor mount is also part of the hinge mount. In any event you might want to place a sponge or other such thing between the door and the trailing edge of the fender.
By the way, prior to failing my window acted similar to your symptoms.

Hi Gang,
I've had my motors out so many times it would make your head spin. OKC- you must have taken off the wrong bolt somewhere cause I never had that problem.
Larry if your motor works and quits over and over chances are it's not the switch but a small circuit breaker that's built into the motor itself. My passenger window was doing the same as yours. I took my motor apart cleaned the armature and lubed every thing up. Prior to re-assembly I found a small bi-metal circuit breaker next to the brushes. I bypassed that circuit breaker by soldering a small piece of wire around it and presto! No more stops and starts. However I caution you about doing this because of the danger of burning something up. There are seperate fuses for each window but don't put a fuse in over 25 amps. If the motor draws over that it will pop the fuse and not start a melt down somewhere. Also, do as Kylie and I did, check the movement of the window regulator and grease the heck out of it upon re-assembly.
Thanks for the part numbers "Lotus guy" I will check those out cause my repairs were only a temporary fix. When I checked the prices of a new Lotus Part they were pretty "Salty" to say the least, around $350 US each!!!
Good Luck, and feel free to contact me if you need any help.

Yip very similar, sometimes I thought there was Colin Chapmans ghost in the car
the windows would go up by themselves, very strange. For a start we regreased the connection in the switch using a spray which worked for a very short time. Then pulled it all out, visually checked all the connections, which a few needed scuffing and cleaning, did a massive regrease and told Colin to go away
. Been great since. But failing this as suggested you may need to pull apart the motor for look. Regards
Kylie
Hi
My Espirt have similar prob. too.
To locaize the problem done following way:
1. removed 2 cables from the window-lift motor and
connect temp. 12V batteri to see window glass
can up/down with out any prob.If it's work then some prob. with switches, cable connections or some negativ connections.( my espit had a very bad cable connector.
2. If motor is not working then you have to take out the motor and try again with 12V batteri.
If motor is not working then you have to replace or rebuild the motor. When you take out the motor
you could check window frame too.
You could up/down glass by hand to see the window glass not stuck !
I hope it will help
