Peter Windsor - Idiot?

Am I alone in thinking this guy doesn't have a clue what he's talking about?
The fact that it's the biggest logistic sporting platform doesn't really get me going I'm afraid Mr Windsor!
This is the second time I've seen him write words to this effect and it really pisses me off. At least now Schumacher's retired he can't worship his feet anymore but......
Rant over.

Q If you were charged with the task of improving the racing in F1, how would you go about it?
A I would change nothing. I think F1 is fantastic as it is. If you want to watch a million meaningless overtaking manoeuvres and lots of shunts go and watch NASCAR or bikes or IRL or something.
If you want to watch the best drivers in the world in the fastest, most technically advanced, purpose-built cars in the world, all competing on the world’s biggest commercial and logistic sporting platform, then watch F1
WTF???!! Meaningless overtaking manoeuvres?! Surely overtaking is a fundamental part of any racing that adds to the excitement and the viewing spectacle. A I would change nothing. I can kind of see his point. If there were a few more of the Alonso / Massa, Hamilton / Raikkonen / Massa, Mansell / Senna, Hakkinen / Schumacher moves in F1 we'd all be the happier...but if it got to the stage of introducing "power boost" buttons, where overtaking happened almost every lap but simply by one driver pushing the power button and blasting by his helpless competitor on the straight...would you want that?
edited to clarify that what I'd really like to see is more actual, genuine racing between these guys, not artifical measures to engineer overtaking for the sake of it. Thankfully we're starting to see more of it this season, let's hope it continues.

I remember when they introduced the Handford Wing into Champ Cars. The superspeedway oval races became pointless: "Oh look Andretti's in the lead....no it's Franchitti...now it's Andretti again...Franchitti...Andre...."
Sorry, but overtaking every 5 seconds does nothing for me - I'd like to see more in F1 but not devalued like that.

Surely that's the goal though? I don't want 'artificial' overtaking in F1 either. Power boost buttons and the like would reduce the art of overtaking to something that happens every other lap. However, what's to say that the sport wouldn't benefit from some subtle-ish rule changes to promote overtaking? Prohibition of protruding aerodynamic devices for a start...
Overtaking isn't easy in MotoGP either. But they don't have false devices and the like to make it happen. If you're a fast rider on a decent bike, it's possible however. Is it really too much to ask to have F1 in a similar vein?
My rant is that Windsor doesn't want overtaking at all and appears to see it as something that would be derogatory for the sport. Cobblers!
max (my dad was a facist) mosely said something similar,
for me as a sport F1 no longer dings my dong, however
does mr windsor not contradict himself ie pinacle of the sport blah blah technological peak blah,
surely a car with a boost button is superior to one that has not!!??
I think some people need to define the word race.
if driving round aimlesly with little to no overtaking is a race then its not a very interesting one.
the moto gp example is good to a point, but bikes ( as I understand it) are far less afected by dirty air etc the best way to level the field and add to overtaking is to ban wings altogether,
which of course will never happen, so the "sport" remains more about a spectacle than a fair competition.

Maybe we should consider that F1 is not a sport as such but more of a team competition and the only thing that really matters is the championships...
The race to build the best car, develop it the most effectively, use the fastest drivers who give the highest level of feedback, have the best tactics etc, etc...
What interests me is about F1 is the whole thing, starting from who is who on the team, of course I watch all the races and love it but I love the whole thing, politics and all.
I'll get my coat

Hmm, never sure what point people are trying to make when they drop in Max's dad. Max has enough faults that could be commented upon, without one having to make a cheap dig at his parents. Reminds me of that Herald journalist's non-article that was the subject of a thread here recently.for me as a sport F1 no longer dings my dong, however

Also, I don't think Peter Windsor made any reference to power boost buttons. That was me. And it's 'pinnacle'.
A racing car with a power boost button is a gimmick and, ironically, detracts from genuine racing almost as much as a plethora of winglets. Perhaps this is why A1 is so dull.
Idiot?! Far from it.
He's one of the few journalists capable of reasoned analysis, while also able to convey sentiment. He's spent long enough around F1 to know what's going on and, even if you don't agree with what he writes, his comment is thought provoking and worth consideration.

A boost button?, you'll be saying ballast in an advancement next, If you want to see contrived excitment you can watch the touring trolley's. for me as a sport F1 no longer dings my dong, however

Lots of overtaking in bikes, but also the london marathon which is just as boring

Peter has been around F1 for a long time and knows more about it then most people. If my memory serves me right at one time he worked for Williams.
If you watched him on F1 Digital+ you would not call him an idiot.
If Windsor really believes there is nothing wrong with the racing in F1 then he should try watching a race from the viewpoint of a spectator rather than as one of the team.
I agree that pointless overtaking is... well pointless... but he's comparing the lack of overtaking in F1 with the endless drafting type maneouvres in American Oval racing, where a car often slips by only to be redrafted again before the end of the bend. That kind of "shuffling" is indeed as dull as hell.
But that is not the problem with F1. The problem with F1 is that there is little actual racing anymore. There are so many driver aids that the cars practically drive themselves, the brakes are so ridiculously powerful that outbraking is almost impossible, and the combination of massive aerodynamics and sod-all mechanical grip means that the type of wheel-to-wheel racing we all used to enjoy until around 94-95 is becoming a distant memory.
F1 is almost the dullest form of motor racing. In my view Americal Oval racing is even worse, but that doesn't mean F1 is any good. You see closer, better racing in most National and Club circuit racing. People get outbraked, people miss gears (now impossible in F1), drivers can follow another car closely and put pressure on, or take more than one line around a bend.
F1 may have the most advanced cars and the best circuit drivers, but the lot of it is wasted producing dull, over technical, monotonous racing. Basically after the first bend you're waiting for the pit stops.
Put proper slicks on, dump the flappy-paddle gearboxes, the traction control, the telemetry, the silly piffy "winglets", the team radios (please spare me the condescending post-win messages from the pits), the silly hubcaps, the over-complicated qualifying rules, the endless adverts and James Allen you might have something decent to watch. And please someone stop Quentin Tarantino from ever attending a race again (what a prick - what drugs had he taken??)
Of course Peter Windsor might be right and I might be wrong, but the global viewing figures for F1 have been slowly tanking for a few years now. Something's obviously wrong.

cheap dig!! wtf are you on about, have you any idea what his dad was responsible for in his day???, but perhaps here is not the place for that discussion, just think max is also a tit especialy when he says people don't want to see overtaking in f1.
as for the boost button remark, I never said that he had said it either, read it again and get a grown up to explain it to you if you dont understand what I said, and as for correcting spelling errors in peoples posts go and get a life you silly sausage.
I cant stand people who come on forums and comment on the comments not on the subject so if thats all you have to say, keep it to yourself

you also missed the point ref the boost button personaly I think a boost button is crap too, unless of course everyone had one per race for example, that could be good, but basicly probably best not. the point i made was if the technology exists to do it where once it didn't, that is also a technological benefit available to the pinnacle of the sport which PW says is where its at and doesn't need changing.
bike racing is infinatly more exciting to watch than F1 although yesterday was good, though mainly because it was les of a foregone conclusion.
London Marathon??? being a little silly now arn't we
