eyup,

Hopefully Del will read this but if anyone else has installed his mod for a front splitter your thoughts will be very welcome.

I've started working on the front splitter mod Seasider has and have the pictures he posted. I like his design because its relatively easy and the splitter can be folded up out of the way so I won't rip the damned thing off on the ferry to Le Mans.

So, I've got a piece of ali bar about 1.1/2 inches wide riveted to a piano hinge.

On the picture I've seen posted you've got two pieces of ali 'bonded' to each other, is there a reason you did this?

Why is the ali profiled at the outside edges?

Is the piano hinge riveted to the car and if so a) why didn't you screw it b) do you remember what size rivets you used?

You've got velcro to hold the splitter up to the bottom of the car but you've also got thumb catches. Did you have a problem with one or the other?
I've got loads of velcro so plan to use that unless you found a problem.

The splitter is held in its down position by a couple of little ali pieces. I was wondering if a couple of wires slung underneath - front to back direction - so the splitter sat on the wires might work. It would mean when the splitter is tucked up you have only a couple of bits of wire under the car and therefore nothing to rip off. Do you think this would work?

If you went about this project again, is there anything you'd do differently.
I might as well get Version 2.0 if you've had any flashes of inspiration wink

I PM'd you all this a couple of weeks ago Del. I just thought I'd mention it in case your PM isn't working.

Ta.

In case you're interested, my front splitter is 6" deep and hinged in a similar way. It works very well; it folds itself out of the way when I open the bonnet (the whole front body section hinges forward on the V8S) and also picks itself up and forms a convenient skid plate if the ground tried to meet the bodywork.

Thanks for the info GreenV8S

6" !! Jesus, you'd be like a snow plough if you went out in the winter hehe

Can you tell me what method yours uses to stop the thing just flapping backwards on the hinge with the air pressure?

Have you got the link to the postings and pics you referred to? Just had a search and I can't find anything, Ta.

I might have, I'll have a look at the printed pictures when I get home and if we're lucky the url might be on there.

Ian,
I e-mailed him earlier with no response and he's normally straight back so maybe he's away.
I've got your damper in my boot now and will be near the M1 tomorrow - fancy meeting up?

Mine is horizontal and flips up if the ground hits it.

If that was me I'd make it longer and run it at a shallower angle (it will need a more positive support to stop it folding down under pressure, couple of straps would be the obvious solution) and let it ride up over speed bumps etc as it wants to. If you were concerned about it digging in you could even put a slight roll on the leading edge, it won't affect the function significantly.

peter, just a thought but wouldn`t the splitter be more effective if it was closer to the bottom lip of the radiator?

Dunno, yes, no, maybe. Hard to tell without measuring it, but just from the look of it I'd say moving it forwards won't make much difference to air flow through the rad, which I assume is what you're after, unless you bring it right forwards to the edge of the opening. What will matter is height - the lower you can get it the better. Moving it backwards towards the axle means that you can afford to hang it lower down without smacking the road, don't know what the approach angle is on that but if we say 30 degrees then two inches back means you might be able to get away with it an inch lower. Turning it round and having it hanging backwards with a lip on the rear edge is starting to look like a smart idea to me from the aero point of view and also resistance to being wiped off. Just don't reverse over any speed bumps!

If you were trying to effect the handling then you'd want to move it well forwards and be *much* bigger, but tbh you're starting from the wrong place if that's what you're after.

hmm, I`ve always been interested in what the splitter is there for, I assumed it was to help deflect the airflow up towards the radiator area, or up unto the engine bay behind it, or to help deflect the air when travelling at speed to offset the effect of the front end getting light, but it seems so small I`ve often wondered how effective it is at the job its intended for,but if you say it would be better facing backwards I think I can understand where you are coming from,
can you enlighten me please?

I thought the job of a splitter was to help create downforce? I've never seen a standard one, in fact was there one fitted as standard?
