The Economist May 31 - June 6 pg 32 to 33

Concludes

"Speed cameras have already worked well. They should be allowed to do an even better job, for all the car lobby's tiresome tantrums"

Judging by the alliteration they have hired someone who thought they were too good for tabloid work, and believes uncritical repetition of government policy is journalism

What cobblers. Speed cameras have worked in slowing traffic over a short distance where the camera is. If they were serious about slowing traffic and educating people they would have invested in many police officers armed with radar guns. Then could go where they liked, and in particular where in their experience the accident blaackspots are, they could stop motorists, educate them why speedings is dangerous, and tell them of their personal experinces of why, and they could book those excessively over the limit.

All those caught would be taught a lesson and would be more careful in the future.

Instead of which people just get 3 points and a £60 fine which they pay, whilst cursing at the system and the police. However it does nothing to educate them about speed, just to keep a better look out.

Me too.
GATSO static scameras simpily give numpties the impression they can speed anywhere, aslong as there are no cameras. It teaches nothing about correct speed.

Moreover, the 'speed kills' obsession gives numpties the impression that if they don't speed, then they must be safe drivers. Colleague of mine had a woman pull out of a car park into the side of his car as he was driving past on a main road. She gets out and accuses him of speeding! 'Cause obviously ALL accidents are caused by speed, aren't they?? And she was only doing 10mph, so it was clearly his fault.
