Noise from altenator?

Is an apparent excess of noise from the altenator grounds for suspecting the regulator is about to pack up on me?

Or is it something more subtle?

I get no excess voltage when it's observed by a slow reacting volt meter, but something in the system is creating more electrical noise than is ideal...

hi Dave, I replaced the regulator on mine, but didn`t notice any excess noise before it went. could it be the alternator bearing?
if you decide to replace the regulator I have the lucas part number here somewhere.

BTW I mean electrical noise, not mechanical noise...

Yes - the regulator part number would be very useful. I may just replace it regardless if it's cheap.
