Hey guys

Looking to get a Griff 500 in the next few months and just been shopping around for insurance. I am 23 have 4 years NCB do 4000 miles a year and I have 3 points. The car will be kept in a locked garage, I have added my old man to the insurace as a named driver (he also has a griff 500).

I currently drive a 1995 Supra Twin Turbo thats around 400bhp at the fly. I am currently paying 850 fully comp for this.

Here are the resaults

Sunninghill - over 25's only
A Manning - over 25's only
Tesco - Nope
Privalige - Nope
A Plan - Nope
MasterQuote £810
Classic line - £939 (without Agreed value)
Elephant - £1329
hastings - £2490

can anyone think of any other companies that I could try?

MSM were great for me, but then I have 3 years over you which makes quite a difference. When are you going to be 25? It may be worth holding off until then if it is only a couple of months as it seems to make a big difference to the premiums.

Hi Daston,

I bought my Griff when I was 24 (although it was some years ago now) and I can remember it being around the £800 mark with similar NCB to you.

Keep looking around as you might find something cheaper but you might also find that £800 is as good as it gets at 23. frown

Are you a TVRCC member? I hear there are insurance discounts if you're a TVRCC member though I couldn't tell you what they are ?!?

Keep hunting..

Barclays and Norwich Union - both part of Aviva - but Barclays undercut NU by about 100squid.

I bought my Griff when I was 25 - coming from a TT supra also! I paid £460 last year and the same again this year on a classic car policy with A Manning, although you do have to be a TVRCC member.

Is the Griff counted as a classic? Might try Lancaster as they were good for my Supra SZ when I was 21. So far AA, RAC, Post office and Barclys either cant insure me or are quoting silly figures.

Normal 10 year rule, so obviously upto a '97 now.
Classicline were good for me, but just gone to hagerty.
3000mile limit, 13k agreed value.
£173 !!!!
Less than the goddam tax even...

Whats this 'agreed value' I keep hearing about AnthonyJ' and how do you get it?
I thought it was normal for a book value to be applied and that was it.

I used Peart Insurance 2 years ago - they dropped out of scope last year but might be worth a shout....

You could always try AON - not used them for under-25s insurance, but they're generally very good.

Hagerty couldnt insure me. Adrian Flux just told me I need to be 50! Cant see why its so much hassle as the supra is the same insurance class, its got more power, modded and imported so not really much going for it. Yet the Griff has less power, costs the same, is standard and of course british!

They ask how much its worth, you say £xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.04 ,
cause its a griff!.

You send in pics, and maybe sign a condition form and they agree.
If the unthinkable happens then there isnt any haggling.

Market value for a griff??????
Hmmm anywhere between here and anywhere...

to be honest you do have a quote for £810

at 23, 3 points, and only 4 ncb. that sounds pretty good...

HArd to really compare, it might not be that you are the problem, but your postcode?

What premium were you expecting, ie compare the supra power to weight, with the griffs. v similar? probably

You'll only get the car on a classic policy if certain conditions (which vary between insurers) are fulfilled. e.g.:

It's a second car
You're over 25
It's over 15
It's garaged
It's your second year or more of ownership

etc...

I remember paying £600 TPF&T for my 1.0 Metro when I was 17 (15 years ago). Insurance never went down after that, as my car's got quicker. The Griff has always been a second car, hence it too is now insured with Hagery for £175. £850 for a Griff as an only car for a 24 year old doesn't sound too far out.

Yeah I see your point guys £810 isnt too bad at all I am paying £880 for the supra at the moment so chuffed with £810. Its just my £880 for the supra includes breakdown and gaunteed value. BHP per ton is in the griffs favour (going by the book that is) but in the real world I expect it to be about the same. Its in a locked garage and is a second car. It might end up dropping loads after the first 12 months.

But GRP costs a hell of a lot more to fix. You crack that nose on a lamp post and it's about £5k to replace!

I also thought £810 was pretty good.

I insured my first red Griff through Heritage on a 7500 mile policy and even at 39, garaged (they don't bother with no claims as they don't give you any either) it was about £800.

Now, at 44 with 3 yrs built up on the weekend car the yellow Griff cost £500 through A-Plan.
