So I've had the exhaust sleeved and am loving the sound - but no pops and bangs (I was hoping for a few!). Now if I tickle the throttle at the right moment I get a muted whoof type noise so I reckon I might be getting them but they arent making it out. Is it necessary to remove the cats to get them or am I doing something wrong ?

The cats will have the effect of muffling any pops and bangs.

Far be it for me to contradict Chassis 33 wink , but having had the Offords Cherry Bomb inserts, i still have my cats in and get plenty of pops and bangs.

Have you tried taking the car in second to about 4500 revs, back off the throttle, then gently feather it. I would have thought that you should get plenty with a sleeeved exhaust.

When mine still had cats it used to pop and crackle but it was more of a muted sound that was more of a rumble, so you should get some at least. As far as I know, the ingredients for good pops and bangs are a hot exhaust (engine running full temp), a bit of throttle usually between 2 and 3k revs for best results (even better when going down hill), and oxygen in the exhaust. So it helps if there is fresh air in the exhaust ie you have a small leak somewhere to let air in and allow the explosion to take place. So it might just be that you have a particularly well sealed system so the fuel has very little air to combine with??

To be sure, put it in second, get it up to 4k revs on a long down hill piece of road and back off whilst giving it a tiny bit of throttle... If there aren't any fireworks then somethings off!

Just noticed your reg is only a few numbers off mine, I am R255 !. And as an old geezer I am allowed to have a noisy exhaust as the performance of the car matches the volume produced.

Seriously though, do you think that PW was completely happy with the sound of the V8 Tivs as they left the factory?

Do you think if the cars could have passed all the type approval tests without cats, pre-cats and baffles then that's how they would have left Blackpool?

IMO, the sleeving just makes the V8 sound like it should do. It's like a B&W Nautilus that's been wrapped in layers of cotton wool finally being unwrapped and unleashed.

All IMHO smile

The trimmer on the AFM does have a significant effect on pop/bang behaviour wink
