Sooty exhaust -------- Explanation
Discussion
A while back i was moaning bout a sooty exhaust on the T350, Well i've just spoken to the guy doing the service and full top end check. Turns out it was a collection of problems. The Lambda sensor had failed only to discover that these are currently very hard to get hold of (Any1 got any sources / ideas). Also an exhaust valve clearance on one of the cylinders had gone to nearly zero meaning that the valve was not closing also adding to the soot on the exhaust / back of the car, so effectively running on 5 cylinders. Only one shim needing replaced isn't the end of the world all other clearances were fine and no signs of wear on the cam lobes or followers.
So not as bad as i feared, just though i'd share this info.

Do you know if tere is valve seat damage due to the non closure of the exhaust valve? This is what seems to have happened to mine. If the valve doesn't shut, the intense heat will affect the valve seat. Which will mean that the valve will never close properly, thus perpetuating and exacerbating the problem. So not as bad as i feared, just though i'd share this info.
This is what I have - not necessarily what you have, but it's best to be aware and maybe ask the questions.
Of course, as your engine has been rebuilt your valve seats may be of sterner stuff.
unsure of the cause, i noticed the suitey pipes and rear end getting worse and the engine appeared to be using oil at a fair rate, then came the sewing machine noise so i stopped driving it and had it taken away, im due to collect it tomorrow so will find out the full story, expensive - yes, it has been serviced, new clutch, diff bush and front discs at the same time so yeh im looking at 3.5k + from what i gather
it may have been worse if i'd continued to drive it but im told no other components were damaged so just the labour and cost of the guides and a new gasket shouldnt be huge in itself.
eeeeek
