The Hotel Mozart (clicky) is about three minutes away from the Spanish Steps, so it's bang in the centre of the historical centre/shopping area if that's what you're looking for.

The hotel is ordinary but it does have what they call the Vivaldi Luxury Rooms, in a separate building on the Via del Corso. Big rooms, nicely decorated, plasma TVs, decent bathrooms with nice toiletries, breakfast in bed included in the price and, best of all, they feel like you have your own private apartment in Rome.

I also think the price is very good for what you're getting.

If money's no object, I'd go for the Hassler or the Eden.

So nearly booked it for my honeymoon, but being a tight Yorkshireman, bottled it at the last minute.

In the end we stayed at Hotel Raphael http://www.raphaelhotel.com which was OK - great restaurant on the terrace.

Hotel de Russie is good too, if not a little stuffy.

bow You win! That looks absolutely amazing and is certainly nicer than the Hassler or the Eden!

Jolly Midas, on the Via Aurelia, it was good when we stayed there as a family in 94! Swimming pool too! Being a car enthusiast, being called Aurelia must be an added bonus.

D'Illgilitera, Via Conditi at the bottom of the Spanish Steps. Discreet yet elegant they do your shopping for you if you can't be botherd to go to Prada/Armani etc.

Boscolo Exedra...best hotel in Rome !!!

http://www.boscolohotels.com/ita/hotels/exedra/hot...

Stayed there a couple of times now and its always been excellent, also has a swimming pool on the roof for those hot summer days.

A scene in the film Oceans Twelve was also shot in the lobby so the missus had to have her photo taken on the same sofa that George Clooney and Brad Pitt sat on !!

Sad but true !

The Hassler, on top of the Spanish steps is my favourite. It has phenomenal views from the roof terrace where decent meals are served.
