I've put off buying a CTEK trickle charger for ages now thinking that the battery in my 993 would survive longer in the garage. Wrong!

Alarm works but engine won't turn over so rather than call RAC man again I'm probably going to get a CTEK XS instead. Before I do one question......will it charge my battery from it's current depleted state to something usable??

It certainly did when my own 993 suffered the same problem.

To any potential 993/996 owners reading this. Unless you are daily driving, buy a ctek - it will be the best £50 you ever spend on the car. period.

Another question if I may...the CTEK manual says (for a negative earthed battery) "Connect the red wire to
the positive pole of the battery and the black wire to the vehicle
chassis. Make sure the black wire is not connected close to a fuel
hose or the battery."

It's the bit about connecting the black wire to the vehicle chassis...how's does that work then? Which bit do you connect it to??

Check which CTEK you are buying the smaller ones will not recharge an empty battery, just top up. The larger ones (like the 3600) will charge a flat battery, they cost around £50.

I just connected it to the negative side of the battery as it already has a cable coming off to the chassis.

It's to keep any spark away from the area of the battery and potentially flammable hydrogen - you should connect the negative lead to an earthed point away from the battery.

Can you not just buy the cigarette lighter attachment as fitted to the CTEK/Porsche OEM unit?

Mines plugged in this way and is much less hassle when you want to disconnect and take the car out. wink

My GT3 has two auxiliary sockets - one has a cig lighter attached in what looks like an ashtray in the centre console, the other has a little plastic cover and is inside the storage box in the centre console. Does it matter which one I use for the CTEK?

I have been using CTEK chargers for a long time now (before they were CTEK they were called Coulombi) and they are without doubt the best. Excellent piece of kit.

Been on charge 20 hours now and the charging symbol is still amber.

Should I be expecting a Green and full battery symbol by now?

IIRC mine took around a day before the green/fully charged light was lit.
