Hi guys, I have always hankered after a TVR, and recently that itch was scratched. I managed to get hold of a 1998 4.2. Everything seemed to be okay, but am now experiencing some difficulty in engaging reverse gear. Is this a common fault? Is the Syncro shot? or is it a simple fix with an adjustment. Also I find braking akin to pushing a brick, there is absoulutely no feedback from the pedal at all, the car stops fine though,is this normal? on any modern car I would be looking at the servo by now. By the way I live in mid-Wales and found it very difficult to find a garage willing to either service or work on TVR's in general. I have now found a garage willing to do so. The car is awsome and once I have had it a bit longer and we are better acquainted I will give it some welly.

Its not uncommen at all to have trouble getting into reverse- if you dont use the right method. What you need to do is to select 5th, then pull straight back into reverse. Its a standard tvr thing.

As for the brakes, well, firm is always a lot better than mushy. If it stops well (ie can lock up the front wheels) then chances are its working fine.

By the way, welcome to cerbera ownership; treat her well, and she won't let you down (much!)wink

Selecting reverse gear is always best if you select a forward gear prior to reverse. I dip the clutch and then select 5th and then reverse without releasing clutch in between...quite normal for the Cerb.

As for the brakes, i can only vouch for mine, which i must say are $hit hot, and pedal feels fine....maybe a good brake overhaul including fluid change is in order.

dont be shy when slipping into reverse from 5th often needs a fairly swift thrust(just like my woman)...

Aaahhhh.

The old "fifth first" trick.

So I'm not the only one doing that then, eh?

Guys you have my gratitude, I have just put your advice to the test and it works fine. Maybe when I start attending some of the get togethers I can buy you an orange juice or something. Cheers anyway.

Welcome to Cerb ownership you'll learn all the cars little "faults". Yours sounds as if its just you getting used to things.
Everyone is right about reverse, but reading on PistonHeads 5th gear is a bit week so maybe select 4th then into reverse, there is no synchro on reverse gears so the gearbox just has to stop spinning, with the aid of a forward gear, then into reverse.
The brakes should be ok if they still work well, maybe the pads have glazed and put a shinny coating on the material which is very hard, maybe take the pads out and give them a good rubbing with rough sand paper.biggrin

Or being really paranoid - a random gear (usually 1st or 3rd) then reverse. smile

My understanding was that you should share the load between 1,3,and 5th gear.
If you use 5th all the time it is likley to wear down th synchro quicker.

The handbook says to use 5th
