Interesting drivers door problem
Discussion
After last Fridays soaking my drivers door started playing up.
Press the door button to get in (or out) and the window drops as usual, waits then winds back up again. A second push of the button winds it down as normal.
Occaisionally it's been forgetting to wind down at all.
So no problem thought I - dirty contacts or the box needs resetting. After making sure it was all dried out I tried resetting the door/windo box but no luck. So today I took the inner door panel off, cleaned all the contacts and tried again.
Great that fixed it - once then it did it again. Annoyance factor more than anything else.
Have I just not cleaned the contacts completely or am I missing something?

Could it be the passsenger door making the drivers door do strange things? Are they not connected in someway through the door control box?...im thinking out loud here, but could you have poor/corroded connections in the passenger door causing something to go a miss on the drivers door...if im talking crap,i apologise now and ill get me coat....

If, after pressing the button the door hasn't opened within a period of time, the window will wind up again, as the magnetic sensor sees the door is closed.
If the door isn't opening then I'd guess either the solenoid that unlatches the door is buggered, or its not getting the pulse to open it.
The solenoid is in the B pillar - I think if yoy pull off the trim you can get to it. I would do this, get the cable out, check if it gets a voltage pulse or not. (put a 12v bulb across the wires).
If it is, suspect the solenoid.
If not, suspect wiring or the control box.

That seems a far more sensible and plausible reason than the load of old bollox ive just spurted out! If the door isn't opening then I'd guess either the solenoid that unlatches the door is buggered, or its not getting the pulse to open it.

Nope it goes something like:If the door isn't opening then I'd guess either the solenoid that unlatches the door is buggered, or its not getting the pulse to open it.

Press the button - door winds down, solonoid trips, door opens.
Open the door and about 2-3 secs later window winds up
Press the button again and window winds down to normal position and stays there
Shut the door and the window winds back up again fine.
It's only been since last fridays soaking. The mirror control box had water marks on it so has been repositioned and I've attempted to clean the contacts on all the plugs. I think I might try that again tomorrow. I'm betting its the two wire contact at the rear of the door as those contacts were heavily corroded.

When the door is open and the window up, does the cabin light go out? I am thinking that the car thinks the door is open, which would suggest the sensor at the bottom has gone.
Yup the window light goes out. It's actually stranger. There's a point at which the door is open about 6 inches that causes this i.e. about the point where the door is flung by the solonoid. Any more open than this and the fault isn't apparent, but as soon as I close the door through this point the window winds up.
So - it's looking like the proximity switch is over sensitive?
Hum - took the inner door panel off again to check/clean contacts again.
Couldn't make the fault reoccur. So I suspect it's dirty contacts again.
Thought I'd sorted it but after the third time of trying after putting it all together it started again. Still suspecting dirty contacts...
Anyone got any preferred contact cleaner? RS list about 45 options.

Could it be the two wires that go to the bottom magnetic door switch are split in the loom going across the hinge gap? When the door is shut its ok but that couple of inches open the're touching and then the door thinks it has shut again and winds the window up. The water being coincidence.
Or maybe just Cerbera doors and they do have a mind of there own (and I'm sure its a female mind!)

I thought that, but then it blew all my theories when I removed the inner door card and disconnected the plu=gs to the mirror control, inner button etc. It all worked fine then.Or maybe just Cerbera doors and they do have a mind of there own (and I'm sure its a female mind!)

I've just been off to Maplins and bought some contct cleaning spray to try that

looks like jens has sold you a dud there biker

I really don't think I have anything to complain about there. It's cost me the grand total of £340 for the service for a whole years running, plus £20 for some clutch fluid. The only fault I've had is a corroded door switch.

Somethimes I worry I'm just not looking after it as well
