Got a VXR in the bodyshop at work at the mo needing a rear bumper and back panel. Parts are over £2K! I'm hearing £1200 for front discs and pads and £700 for a wheel.

Why? Yeah I know the parts are coming from Aus and its a rare car (here) but these examples are crazy. Makes my duratec elise look very cheap to run by comparison.

I was talking to Roger about this on Wednesday.

Looks like the independants are becoming quite competitive as some of the upgrades are more cost effective than the stock parts.

Cost wise it must be the GM parts delivery via Aus that does it....

With 18000 odd of these in the States and a strong exchange rate surely some of this kit can be sourced from there cheaper.

After all over there the Monaro`s just another big V8 car amongst a sea of others so prob not that special to command a premium for parts.

I believe pjr are the same as the vxr stuff for brakes, considering my vxr disks are plastered in their stamps (I think it was pjr)

The states get smaller wheels standard dont forget so their brakes I would suspect are different

for engine parts and some suspension bits there's no doubt the states are the place to buy - complete set of poly bushes for front + rear sway bar and front and rear control arms for 60 quid as an example. Full set of high flow heads, valves, uprated springs, titanium retainers for 1200 quid assembled . Aeroforce scan guages for ODBII port to replace gauges in binnacle - UK price 300 quid, US price 400$+import and carriage.

Oz can also prove a cheap source as well - try find a supplier over here that will give you a set of 1 3/4 coated stainless long tubes for under 500 inc carriage but before VAT/import duty - yet thats exactly what you'll get from Oz if you shop about. Ripshifter - around 250 quid from Oz. Could go on and on with lists of prices. The "problem" if you like though is your warranty is then with these far flung companies and obviously getting the parts fitted may prove difficult if you go to a UK installer with bits you didn't buy from them. Same as a lot of tyre places will only fit tyres they supply in case anything goes wrong - who gets the blame supplier or installer? If you want to source some "upgrades" try thunderracing.com in the US

PBR are the same discs for VXR's, even have the same bell housing, just don't have HSV stamped on 'em, that's all.

Monkfish will do a front set, fitted, with Performance pads for £627 ('tis what I paid...I think...there or thereabouts anyway)

Not bad.

Always your choice to do or not do mate.
Can always import from Australia but they'll still cost you best part of £450 I believe.

No idea if GTO ones will fit.

I will be honest though, I am idly looking around at getting a new car and the price of Monaro parts generally (inc upgrades, some of which are ridiculously priced) is putting me off getting another one or VXR8 etc.

I'm not blaming monkfish for their price, they have to probably pay a high purchase price

but the prices in general for parts is a joke and the only reason the parts get away with being so costly is we'll pay it through the nose.

Certainly for my next set of discs I'll be looking at pbr or some equiv from the states. Might even be cheaper to get some custom made

How often on average is it likely that parts such as discs and pads will need replacing on a Monaro though?

VXR's seem to get through discs very quickly, as in sub 20k sometimes

Comparitive to other V8 cars and many premium brand cars, I think the parts prices are pretty reasonable.

I thought Volvo S80 bumpers were a ripoff at £500 but then over £1200 for a Monaro one! A complete, handlayed Lotus Elise clamshell costs less and its like the whole front/rear of the cars bodywork.

So speaketh the main dealer who is trousering a 30% mark up of said astronomical prices!!

Nobody gives much concern about the price of a bumper, bonnet or windscreen - but brake disks and pads at thousands are profiteering!!

I think I paid $600Oz for a front set of 143mm vented disks shipped plus £70 odd for pads EBC's
Interestingly Duncan (IslandboyHSV) got a set at the same time. Got it from the shop on www.justcommodores.com.au
