May be the coolant temp sensor, thats the one signalling the ECU not the gauge one.

Is it more noticeable at idle when your in the car, chuffing noise under acceleration, pretty much dissapears when your rolling at 35mph plus ?...could be blowing exhaust manifold, take a look at the thread on this page.

Get the exhaust manifold checked out, if that's OK look for leaks further down the system.

I've also just picked up my 1st TVR and have a similarish issue with it. There is a noticeable ticking/tapping noise on idle and when driving. The exhaust manifold gaskets have just been replaced but the noise is still there. Whats the likely cause - tappets (do they have them?) or cams maybe?

Why are you guys buying cars with either induction or exhaust leaks that you can hear? I hope you got a good discount to take care of these. There's plenty of choice in this buyers' market so no need to end up disappointed on your first day of ownership. Anyway hope the cause can be found quickly and that you can get out and enjoy driving without listening to every noise, fearing the worst. That is no way to get in to TVR ownership.

Before you worry about the gasket going, wait till it cools and check the nuts are tight. These eventually become soft and work loose.
