we have managed to get places on the 2008 rally (we were marshalls at this year's launch) and we need some help locating a suitable car. We've decided to go in a 4x4 Panda - although I wanted to go in a Bond Bug ha ha.

does anyone have any other suggestions?

it must be under 1 litre (or you can have more for a novelty vehicle - this year a black cab, last year a hearse for eg) - and it must be cheap, very cheap.

here's the link for this year's rally which is currently underway

cheers folks

ah cool, my old school friend (tom) runs the event, how about something rare like a yugo or a 127 fiat, think the bond bug would be tough and you would roll over a lot, sounds awesome and i wish i got my arse into geat to do it!

Hey there, new guy here (and already ressurecting an old thread! - not intentional, couldn't find any other recentish mongol rally threads!).

Me and a few friends are thinking of doing this in '08, hoping to blag a place as soon as they're available.
We're only poor students, so we're hoping to use a cunning combination of sponsors and the fact there'll be four of us to raise enough cash, and we'll be starting fundraising as soon as we get a guaranteed place!

There's been lots of threads here in the past debating what kind of car to use - with a fair few sensible 1 litre suggestions on the go.
I was wondering though, what kind of car would be best for a group of four? (probably one of the more insane ways to tackle the rally!).

Essentially, core reliability isn't too much of a problem - more important is ease of repair work, as most of us have little mechanical knowledge.
We're also hoping to get a car soon after registration, as the longer we have to work on it, the better we'll get to know the car - I'm planning on using the Haynes guide and many a tool box to take the car to bits over and over, until I know my way 'round the car smile

One of the main monetary problems we're looking at is insurance - as we are all drivers, and all want a go driving. Two of the group will be female, so it makes sense to put one of them on the insurance as named drivers, but even so it'll be in excess of £1500...

Hmm... may come back to this post in a while to edit - much of that was just writing ideas as they came out of my head!

3 rounds of place draws, and admission from the organisors that lots of places didnt get taken up because of people making multiple applications and they still think the process was fair.

what a load of BS the mongol rally selection process turned out to be.

I totally agree as I also applied. If they were trying to use hype to promote the Mongol it has failed. I got so fed up with being piss*d about by them I told them to stick it.

some of their emails made my piss boil. like the one "oh but loads of people drop out so if you are on the waiting list". great so a bunch of timewasting bstids get a place and then get to drop out, so people who had made a genuine plan to compete don't have enough time to prepare, book time off etc. thats a REALLY GOOD PLAN ISNT IT!

why didnt they just take a £500 no refundable deposit on day 1, that would see how serious people were.

the whole thing was a shambles, just wrecks goodwill from genuine entrants and clogs up teh entry list with people who think its a good idea then shit their pants because they have never left the country in a car.

Their emails really pissed me off. the way the draw was conducted really pissed me off and the fact they don't seem to care that most of the entrants aren't serious and genuien entrants don't really matter pissed me off even more. Agree with you, they can stick it.

I think some of the people that did the original Mongol Rally have started up the other one (Mongolia Rally) they say its all for charity where as the other one wasn't. Cheaper to enter and you can use any vehicle you want. I'm thinking of doing it. About 50 teams booked so far.

Me and my uni friends are going travelling once our courses are over next year, and this rally idea really interests me.

The only major expense I can see are the flights back home. Had a quick search and found nothing below £1000 to get back!
Unless getting home can be done cheaper, then this looks expensive, and probably unviable.

I flew home from Mongolia via Seoul for £450, booked in Ulaan Bataar 2 days before the flight left. Very nice people at the flight shop and got a free pen biggrin

You could always drive back!

Was thinking of doing it this year myself.

But having read those emails they send though, gave up as it did appear to be so badly organised. Hopefully next year they'll have it sorted rolleyes

The one we are looking at doing is Mongolia Rally, which i think you have to leave your car, and it gets sold for charity. But have since found some cheaper flights!

I see that there is a pub meet hosted by the charity rallies people in London on saturday, anyone going?

Yes, I am wavey. Not going to do the big Mongolian one as you need 6 weeks off work so am opting for the Georgia one (probably going via Iranyikes).

6 weeks, we were aiming for three, and flying home. Or are you doing the other rally where you drive back?

How did you get out of Ulann Batar and who did you fly with ?

Is Beijing not easier to get to as Seoul seems further away ?

When you get to Ulaan Bataar there is a flight shop in the main square that everyone descends on, there are others but this one is really good. They arrange your flights, print tickets there and then. Seoul is the best and cheapest route home. Monglian airways out of UB, then Korean Air, who are bloody fabulous back to Heathrow.
