Evening All,

Having started the NIMBY thread thinking "there must be something more to this. These people can't really be this evil surely?" and been thoroughly persuaded that yes, they really can be, I'm going to pootle down to Dorking to show my support for the SSAFA at the planning meeting on Wednesday evening (7pm).

Anyone else care to come along?

Cheers,

Chris.

However a couple of the local Selocers are meeting at the Parrot in Forest Green @ 8pm 31st July. I'll see what support I can rustle up.

You might get more interest if you explain WTF "SSAFA" actually is or give us a link to the other thread. I know I'm a thicko but I've got no idea what you're on about.

Sorry! I had assumed people would've read the "Selfish Nimby Tw*ts" thread over in P&P! Rather than just pointing you at that and leaving you to wade through 13 pages, here's what I've posted up by way of starting a thread on other forums...

Elsewhere I said:
Headley Court, a few miles up the road from me, looks after severely injured servicemen and women during their rehabilitation. As this includes amputees, soliders with severe brain damage and other serious injuries, we're not talking a quick couple of weeks and off they pop. These guys are in there a long time, and in many cases will never fully recover.

Of course, if you were going through that, you'd want to have your family near you. As the vast majority of these families don't live nearby, the SSAFA set out to do something about this by buying a large house in Ashtead to provide accomodation for up to 6 families at a time.

The residents of the road where the house is and the neighouring roads have complained, and are opposing the request for planning permission. Why? For a whole load of bull**** reasons which just seem to be hiding the fact that they simply don't want all these unattractively maimed soldiers and their lower-class families cluttering up their nice exclusive street!

http://www.36grayslane.co.uk/ will tell you all about the arguments being made.

There is also a Downing Street petition at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Headley/ The petition currently stands at 35,745.

Another 6,000 names will make it the third most popular current petition.

Another 8,000 and it will be in the top 10 since Downing Street began the site.

All this for a petition that's only been running for a few days!

The government may not care, and the residents of Ashtead Park estate sure as hell don't, and that just makes it all the more important for the rest of us to show that we do!

If you haven't signed the petition, please do so. If you have, please forward it to your friends and put it onto any other forums you visit!

Finally, if anyone is in the Dorking area, Mole Valley District Council are meeting to vote on the planning application on Wednesday evening at 7pm, and anyone wanting to go along to show their support would be welcomed.
When I first read the thread on P&P, I took a fair bit of convincing that the residents really didn't have any valid fears. I couldn't believe that people in this country could be quite so callous and spiteful towards people who have put their lives on the line to defend them if and when needed, but sadly it seems they can!

Thanks Ben! Feel free to email it to all and sundry as well. One of the ex-army guys on the ARRSE website who is working his last day at a certain orange-liveried courier company today has just sent one to all 18,183 employees! biggrin

I'm a bit le run, but signed anyway!

I've been indirectly involved with Headley court recently through the BTCC driver Fiona leggate who I write reports for. She visited the centre recently and has been inviting people from there to come along to the races. A couple of them have been being her grid blokes. (As opposed to grid girls!)

I really can't understand why these people were objecting, i can't think of any negative impact it would have at all and there are loads of worse things you could live next door to.
