My rev counter has started bouncing very erratically, when I stop accelerating instead of a steady needle it bounces up and down massively before finally settling on the correct RPM. Any ideas what would cause this?

This is often due to HT leads shorting out. Re-route them so that they don't rest on any metal surfaces and see if that solves ot for you

I have recently fitted magnecors to my Chim400 and the bouncing actually improved over the last set!

Not sure what the cause is but is seems to be quite common?

Yes - but they've been on the car for 2 years and over 15'000 miles. The rev counter has only been playing up recently.

Check the connections to the LT (12V) side of the coil. Make sure the HT leads are routed away from the LT wiring: maybe one of the HT leads has moved?

It's usually caused by the LT wire back to the rev counter picking up interference from the HT system. As someone else suggested, check for a faulty HT lead, but also check the rest of the HT system: coil, distributor cap, rotor arm. Noted any misfiring?
