OK. You may have read my previous thread on my N/S front brake pipe fracturing through last week. This week I have fixed the pipe and bled the front brakes....all OK.

Came to bleed the rear brakes and the bleed nipple is seized solid.....then the inevitable happens, the nipple shears off below the nut. Tried to get the remaining part of the nipple out with the relevant tool and that snaps in what remains of the nipple. There is no loss of fluid, so everything is safe at the moment...but how do I extract this mess given that there is so little room to work on anything....I suppose I'll have to remove the calipers and sort it on a bench...any advice?

hi
if the brake pipe comes in at the top of the caliper (to dark to look now and i cant remember) it is sometimes possable to bleed from the pipe connection by pumping the brakes up and holing on then quickly loosening then tightning the brake pipe the pedal should go to the floor when pipe is loosened , repeat this severall times until all air removed. you cant help getting fluid everywhere doing this so be prepaired , and try not to snap the pipe off wink

I don't think I have EVER had any success with those extraction tools other than on bolts which have sheared under tightening (not bottomed out). If the thing is so corroded-in that it snaps, an extractor does not have the tensile strength to overcome the rust before it too snaps... but then you know that wink
You could try abrasive burrs to grind out the remains of the extractor, then drill as much of the nipple out as you can without hitting the thread. Once you get within a few thou" of the thread it's often possible to collapse the remains inwards and fish it out that way.

If you use a presure bleeder then you don't need the nipple, just let the fluid pour out for 15 secounds, then tighen up, just losen the what you can at the highest point. and the presure will force the fluid out, and any air. no air will get back in as its under pressure. also the handy thing you can do it one manned.

You can then fix the nipple when you have to do sothing else in that area. or have more time

Another good tip is to push the pistons back in too - this will force most of the crappy fluid out of the caliper.

IMHO - remove caliper and send it to a specialist to be re-conditioned and the nipple replaced.

I bought one of these at BBWF from Shpub...........

https://delta.securesslhost.net/~shenglt/catalog/p...

As Wedg1e said you can drill out the nipple taking care not to damge the female threads. (undersize drill then collapse what's left. Failing this it may be possible to re-tap to the next size up then fit an adaptor from Shpubs extension pipe to the caliper. Steve may even be able to make you a special?

Thanks chaps. Much appreciated. I think the job can wait until winter (has summmer arrived yet or was it on a Tuesday in April)?

I like a challenge and I hate it when a plan goes to poo!
