Well finally got to see a race live after 3 years. And it was well worth it. Did anyone else go to London over the weekend to see this? Hoping to catch the last race in Perth in November. The pilots are more skilled than i gave then credit for smile

Not the best pics but gives an idea of the racing smile

I think the record they have is actually 13.9G. Bezenesky pulled this in a previous race.
You need hairs on your chest to do that sort of stuff.

AFAIK it's down to the 'course'. The high g's come from the 'flips', they now make them longer so the G is less.

Of course, this may not be correct, but figures.

No idea!! i did ask the same thing. I think they impose penalties on the times like they would for hitting a gate. nothing electrical/mechanical involved!!!

Some of the airplanes are only rated to 10-12 g and they were being pushed beyond that. It was not deemed safe when there is a big crowd watching and the possibility of both wings breaking off! Or the polits blacking out.

You can see them struggling to breathe when their in the 8g+ turns.

Frightning but cool. cool

I want to get into airobatics later in life. smile

Anything above 8-9g is not sustainable for any length of time, however, if the straining method is adopted, top physical condition g tolerance training and limited exposure for less than say 8 secs, then an experienced pilot can avoid "grey out" at these sort of extreme gravitational forces.
The aircraft are extremely unlikely to break, the pilot sits on the main spar which runs through the cockpit the su 29 sokhoi for example has a main spar destructively tested to more than 20g.
the limiting factor will be the pilot.
some of these guys will be loosing colour vision and experiencing tunnel vision if they get the timing wrong for the strain, but within 2 sec all is back to panoramic colour no problem!
however, the desire to win makes pilots/drivers push beyond as competion gets tighter and if one of these top pilots does overcook it the consequences are dire .
it takes circa 20-30 secs to recover from full g induced "blackout" however it also takes circa 5-10 sec to go from tunnel vision/black and white (aka greyout) to full blackout, during which time one is full conscious just unable to see and are spatially disorientated but still well able to release the stick to unload g. the only problem will be if he is coming out of the 3rd quarter of a circular manoeuvre(normally the highest g section)
then the release of the stick will result reduced alpha with low altitude i.e. he hits the deck "game over" happens every year somewhere!

solution fit each a/c with a teltale g meter set to say 12.5 g sustanded in excess of 2 secs ,cost $1000 each. ring the bell and your out!

Anyway Greg if that hasn’t put you off get in touch you will love it!! addictive like trackdays.

We went to watch it too. Although overpriced (compared to the cost in other countries - e.g. free in Rio and Istanbul), it was very good. Even my better half thoroughly enjoyed the day! Those pilots are something else! smile

Apparently if you fancy having a go yourself, you can have a go in an Extra 300 at this place 70 miles west of London:
