Does anybody know what size bolt I need that bolts the exhaust onto the engine block - mine seems to be missing and I get a kncoking noise on tickover.

At a guess 5/16 or 3/8 x 1"Whit..may be UNC though, best to remove one and wander along to your local fastener stockist.
You may also need to replace the offending gasket,on the other hand you may be lucky.

I assume you mean the lower bracket, not the manifold bolts. I expect it's UNC but I can't tell you what size. If you can measure the major and minor diameters it would be possible to narrow it down to a few suspects, and with the depth too you would be able to order the bolts.

That's my problem I don't have the original one! I don't remember the old one (when it was on) having a gasket with it. This is a metal flange that is stuck onto the side of the exhaust pipe as it goes past the engine and you bolt that flange to the side of the block.

Had this in my hand yesterday, I am pretty certain it is not metric, if I am right then by eye it is 5/16" dia, thread is coarse so UNC and thread length is 1".

My guess : 1" X 5/16" UNC(plus large flat washer and spring washer)

I'm fairly sure it requires 1/2 inch spanner/socket to remove if thats any use.

Just gone and tried a std thread 8mm nut on it, it would have gone on had it been the right thread(it wasn't, too fine) so it is 5/16" and must be UNC, 1" long thread.

The local hardware shop didn't have any - too "specialised" apparently! So am meeting the missus at Ikea for lunch for some furniture - so will pick some up then and let you know.
