Saturday night I was on my way to the midnight tunnel run making steady progress down the M11. I cruse up behind 3 or 4 cars with a trafpol Volvo at the head of the queue and keep a steady 70mph. When I was along side the volvo they pulled on to the slip road off the motorway.

Now I am not usually paranoid but I am on 6 points, my car is loud & slightly conspicuous. I hit the cruse control and kept a beady eye on the rear view mirror.

Sure enough going past the exit slip road, 2 white lights appear and rejoin the carriageway. The lights then overtake some slower cars and come to rest a reasonable distance behind me.

5 miles later they are still there.

10 miles later they are still there.

The lights obviously get bored and decide to over take. Low and behold it is said trafpol!

Monaro 1, Trafpol 0 (Speed Cameras 2).

Moral of the story, watch out for the slip road scam!

Yours, Mr Smug smokin

That's not a scam.

It's the oldest trick in the book.

I think this little idea pre dates Scameras and maybe even my own driving licence? And I bet it does work more often than not!

Clearly the only option is to follow them up the slip...

How can you follow them if they're behind you?

Can be done at a roundabout - go right round and drop in behind.

Those were the days... Never fell for that old chestnut either biggrin

To this day I never trust a set of headlights at night if I haven't already overtaken them.

yes Especially if they look like they are gaining on me wink

I always also make sure that I check my rate of progress when passing a slip road.

The trick is, once they've pulled off up the slip, absolutely nail it to the next junction, where you can then pull off yourself and get behind them as they shoot past and, at a suitable distance, enjoy making good progress.wink

presumably they don't employ this trick where there are two junctions closeish together.

Might have looked dodgy if I followed them over the chevrons!

Don't you do that to avoid the queue? wink

It was midnight for me so they zoomed over the junction... but yes, I did consider seeing if they would catch me up but decided caution was the better part of valour (or some other mixed metaphor).

Hi smile

Seen this done but I imagine it would depend on the car they were "following"

As an example..if it were say a Ferrari or maybe my car....and I nailed it as someone put it...

I would be several miles ahead of them and doing over 180 and still accelerating.......there is no Police car in the UK that could catch me from that distance...assuming a clear motorway etc...a few helicopters though lol smile

Not that I would be stupid enough to do that, especially at night but my point is....I would assume this trick is not used on high speed cars as the Police would lose a lot of them no ??

All the best Brett smile

I've not seen this done, although I am aware of how traffic behaviour changes the minute a police car joins a slip road to leave the motorway. Some people don't even wait till the cars out of sight before stepping harder onto the loud pedal. So I guess these are the guys the BiBs are looking for. driving

saw this done last week., trafpol being followed by a bunch of smart bmw's, he drives off the slip, they floor it and vanish, he comes up the other side of the roundabout, puts on the blues and 5 miles down the road is a queue of traffic with some bmw's on the hard shoulder being ticketed. Road always gets a q at that time in the morning and they could not escape smile

Seen this done a few times. I always look for a traffic car which has just left the motorway rejoining.
