Went for a spin the other day and i've noticed a loud rattling noise coming from beneath the car. Doesnt do it all the time but went sat idling i'm guessing its the exhaust system - maybe hanging brackets broken? I replaced the rears about 6 months ago and they look fine so maybe its the middle ones?
Has anyone had anything like this happen and if its the brackets are they easily sourced?

Cheers
Jon

I had a knocking at idle - the centre hanger of the exhaust system is adjustable so lifting it up abit cured the knocking. Hope this helps.

I had this rattle / knocking at cold idle. Was the exhaust catching one of the under trays. As above, up on a lift, adjust bracket, job done.

I am also taking note of these comments as my Sag has an exhaust rattle when you pull away that sounds like a plate/shield vibration.

Mine too and pretty much only does it when its cold. Dosnt sound serious, just sounds like the exaust is hitting the heat shield or something.

Insufficient rev's. Gotta give it more beans. My Sag does it too, but only when I try to drive it gently -some might say that this is not how the car was designed to be driven

Insufficient revs when pulling away certainly highlights the rattle, in fact, when my father had a drive he pulled away from a junction in 2nd and it sounded like the car was going shake to bits! biggrin I sharpish pointed out that this was'nt like his Merc SL and 1st was required!

hehe

Only rattle mine has is from the mirror adjustor thingumpybob. I stuck a bit of clear tape across it. Problem solved. Oh, and the bonnet makes the odd slight rattle at high velocity on a seriously bumpy road.

If pulling away with insuficient revs produces an engine rattle than disappears straight away then it may well be the timing chain knocking against the cover. Nothing major and should be an easy adjust at the next service.

No it's definitely from the rear. Not engine related, has to be the brackets holding the rear silencers

Sorry not mentioned this one earlier;
Edited: Applies to Sagaris
The cans should be solid in the back box if waggled, if not; WHEN COLD use a 10mm ring spanner reach under the can between the diffuser to tighten the clamp so there is no movement at all.
If the whole lot moves including the back box and the other can, its likely the weld on the centre mount will have fractured. You can re-weld but make sure its preheated when its done or it will fracture again. The rubber mounts seem to be OK.

Hope this helps

I would get the engine mounts checked if i were you,as the engine had dropped, as mine both went. And there is a thread running on here, and that sounds like quite a common problem !!

My t350 does this too, at low revs. It is the same noise as an E36 BMW I used to run, which turned out to be be heat shield rattle around the cat
