What do we all think of this then ? My only question is why couldn't it be James Allen that was on holiday ??

ITV F1 said:
Britain’s last Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill will take to the commentary box this weekend when he joins ITV Sport’s James Allen as co-commentator for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The 1996 world title winner is stepping into Martin Brundle’s shoes alongside James while Martin is away on holiday.

Hill will be providing expert comment and analysis during ITV Sport’s live coverage of the qualifying and race action from the Hungaroring.

“It’s a real pleasure to have Damon Hill in the commentary box with James Allen whilst Martin is away on holiday,” said Gerard Lane, editor of ITV’s F1 coverage.

“As a former world champion it will be fantastic to hear what he has to say in a season where there is a British driver leading the championship.”

The 22-time grand prix winner will be returning to the scene of some of the most memorable performances of his 115-race F1 career.

He took his first grand prix win at the circuit for Williams in 1993 and followed it up with another victory two years later.

And he came tantalisingly close to pulling off a stunning upset in 1997, when a heartbreakingly late hydraulic problem robbed him of victory for the unfancied Arrows team after an inspired drive.

His impressive record there also boasted four further points-scoring finishes.

hill will verbally batter allen and make allen look like a fool. hill has immense knowledge of the sport and tactics and i always get the impression that james allens life long "passion" for f1 can be counted in years with the fingers on one hand.

Wouldn't it be better if Hill was teamed up with Murray. They got on very well in the past and I think would make a natural "double act".

All the guest commenters have been excellent recently. I'd be very surprised if Damon doesn't keep up that trend.

The only exception was Jody Schekter - he was rubbish and admitted it as a closing statement. Can't remember when it was but it was several years ago.

Maybe Brundle has had enough of the celeb grid walks and listerning to the cock? Seems an odd time for a vacation!

Can't wait to listen to Hill's craic though.

Impossible. The toddler on the Triple Velvet adverts could be commentating alongside James Allen and still make him look like a cock!

Brundle must be fantastic at negotiating contracts (some might say evidence of that is Coulthard's continued presence on the grid) he only has to work about 20 weekends a year yet still manages an annual holiday mid season. I am sure he could afford to go somewhere long haul in the off season if he was after some sun.

I'd bet you that Damon will be good value.
He knows an enormous amount, in stark contrast to his buffoon colleague in the booth.
He also is not afraid of speaking candidly, again in stark contrast to the babbling idiot.

If Damon only offers one nugget of insight, which he no doubt will do, he will be a welcome respite from Enzo's dad.

Martin's son Alex is racing in FPA this season and is out at Oulton Park next weekend end at my meeting there so i'm expecting Martin to be there along with Jonathan Palmer too.

God I hope this meeting goes well!

oh dear - someone that makes "the cock" looks good
maybe he'll get into the swing of it - but Damon's never been a good public speaker

I don't think he did too bad, but I think the c*ck should be paired with someone with a shorter temper and a mean left hookwink

i have to admit that he was the only reason that i watched practise today. usually practise is take it or leave it, but for once it was genuinely interesting listening to Hill.

Yes, Damon did a very good job today.

He made some very good comments, had the right balance with the ITV love affair with Lewis, put JA down a number of times and I'm sure I heard him say a slightly rude word but totally in context.
