Interested in a Dune Buggy, and was wondering if anybody had any driving impressions, on the short wheelbase buggy.

I like the old Deserter Gt or Bounty Hunter,

Never had the chance to drive a buggy, and was wondering how they drove on streets and Offroad, and what to look for, or any problems a short wheelbase buggy might have with 17in. wheels...biggrin.

Thanks guys for your feedback
Italo

I used to have a lwb beach buggy. Buggies are great fun if you don't mind being stared at.

THe ride will depend on the age and quality of the buggy and it's components...

I guess I'm looking for some very affordable fun.........but how is the handling ? skittish ? a short wheelbase chassis and big wheels, does make me think about it........

I like your Midtec.......what winscreen is that ? from what donor ? can you still find it ?

the handling is a bit like a beetle with a foot missing from the wheelbase - or in other words, interesting hehe Pirouetting on a wet roundabout was always fun...

They are however a bloody good laugh and with some tweaking and care on the suspension side can be made to handle perfectly well for the type of car they are (which really isn't a sports car in any shape or form). They are better if you keep them nice and low, rather than going for the jacked up look. Pop an Alfa or Subaru engine in and you have a really rather spritely car. If you are looking for handling you might want to consider going into more work and making a mid engined version.

I like the idea of mid-engine buggy...........but I think i will stick to a classic, nice and low in its stance buggy

Thanks for the feedback..smile

I wanted to buy a beach buggy after being a passenger in a college mates beach buggy (many years ago now). His was a low swb, mine a lwb on huge rear tyres. The handling is very different. His could be thrown around corners at at whatever speed he dared to....but mine wasn't quite so good on the handling. I bought the first beach buggy that I viewed and it happened to be lwb...but it was happy with it because I had enough room for 2 12" subs yes and plenty of passengers to throw around on the rear bench.

I will post pics of it when I next see my cousin. I sold it to him after buying the Midtec...

The windscreen? I haven't a clue as I bought it already built. Ido have a couple of manuals and several Midtec owners newletters, so please reply if you want me to go through them. My MIdtec has a Renault 2L 8V and 4 speed gearbox...although I believe most had Ford pinto engines. Strange looking things but it makes people smile as much as my old buggy...and goes a lot quicker.

There was a Midtec for sale on PH's a while back. Not sure if it still is.

Thanks for the info.....I now have a better idea on what to look for.

With reference to the windscreen, I had read it was a rear Citroen Ds Pallas item, and was wondering if it was true.....
I looked at a few pictures on the net, and it could be true !

I was thinking of fitting something similar to an old buggy...

I think the Midtec had great potential as a kit, in my opinion it was let down by the rear design, it doesn't need the wheel sticking out, but, with a little design update, it would make a great new kit even today.
I wonder who still owns the moulds now ?, if you do have pictures of the manual or other, I would love to see them.

A few pictures of the type of buggy I would like to own, or a mix of the two as a design..:smile

Cheers
Italo
