So there I was trundling home, hood down, birds singing (probably). Took a left into the village. Loud clunk from the front. OMG! Have I lost a tooth of the steering rack? Steering seemed OK so drove home very gingerly. At home, I found that the split pin holding the rubber bushey thing and cast thingey had broken, part fallen out, allowing the said rubber bushey bit and associate cast thing to fall off!
Seemed a simple enough job to fix. New washer and split pin. Got it done but took 3 hours! Thank goodness I have a lathe to open up a washer, but the split pin was a real pain to get in. What is the easy way?

Had the bar shifted causing the problems?

I think using a lathe as a file is probably what took the three hours... It must have been a bugger to get it through the hole...

Hey Wedgie, have you been peeping? Anyway the file was a bit scarey, so I resorted to using a boring bar...
Don't think it had moved, just the split pin breaking up.
