Not a happy bunny...carpet got wet and after drying out the now smells 'musty'. Short of re-carpeting the whole interior anybody got any advice?

Could use those 'tree' thingy's to override the pong but would like a more permanent solution if possible. The carpets are actually in very good nick - not worn away or threadbare etc...

I thought there might be some old wives trick I could try, you know, "Crushed Onions and Ragwort juice" type potions.

Any help would be greatly appreciated by a bloke whose nose is sore from washing-peg pinch.

Sorry to hear that Ian.

I think it is bacteria that give off the smell - so try something like the spray on antiseptic kitchen surface cleaners - Dettox. BUT make sure it is not bleach!!

Then give them a blast with Fabreeze.

Good luck mate

Hire a carpet cleaner? When my Sister moved out of her house, her housemate cleaned the carpet with a pro cleaning machine, the carpet looked great and the room started to smell fresh and clean again.

You can buy a cheap carpet cleaner that will sort the problem. Don't use houshold products for carpet cleaning.

I'd rent something like a "rugdoctor" from a cleaning place.

In the meantime, chop up some lemons and leave them in the car (on a plate). The lemon gets rid of the musty smell quite fast.

Normally I wouldn't know this sort of thing :-) but I've just had minor flooding in 2 houses...

Thanks Guys!

I tried the febreeze route alone but it was not very successful. So in order of cost-first I'll try the following:

Lemons (say 2) leave overnight
Cheap Carpet Cleaner spray/Anti-Bac spray (non-bleach)
Carpet Cleaning Machine/Rug Doctor
Call in a professional Carpet cleaner

I'll report back on the results as I'm sure this must happen to a lot of Chims over the course of time.

Bloody rain.

Again thanks!

I did the same thing ,,, got the carpets soaking in Le Mans this year, started to smell not long after really bad. Tried Febreeze not to good maybe a little better but the tried one of those gel thingys from Halfords they are supposed to neutralise the pong and seemed to do the trick. Oh and put a tray of silica crystals in the footwell to soak the damp up. I think i have solved the leak too, I sealed where the cables go through the wing under the bonnet.
