Dont know if this thread has been done before, But i was Talking to a mate the other day and he was saying when he imported a standard toyota starlet gt turbo he chased his mate in a scooby and kept with him to about 100mph. The starlet was totaly standard and the scooby had the odd mod. So just wondering what the quickest pocket rocket is and what they are capable of going to with what mods ??

Whats the standard power (130bhp ish)?
No way would that keep up with an Impreza.
Whats fastest? Depends how long you want the engine to last. I'd imagine you could up the boost on any of the forced induction small cars but given they also have small engines (typicaly 1.3l) there is only so far you can push them.

Lowest power classic Impreza: 208 bhp / 1250 kg = 166 bhp/ton
Lowest power bugeye Impreza: 215 bhp / 1350 kg = 159 bhp/ton
Mk1 MR2 1.6: 125 bhp / 980 kg = 128 bhp/ton (just to give a better perspective of what the Starlet actually compares to for PWR)
I'm afraid a standard Starlet wouldn't see which way the scoob went (unless the 'odd mod' involves removing the turbo - my 2.0 NA Legacy wagon is 116 bhp/ton). Perhaps the scoob driver was (a)not trying. or (b)crap.
In answer to the OP question, my vote would be for the Pulsar GTi-R or Lancia Integrale

CRX SiR, 165bhp, weighs under a ton, handles like a go kart.
And I wouldn't be surprised if the Starlet did keep up with a Scooby. I've held an estate Scooby turbo up to 120mph when we had to back off because of traffic, in my 1.6i 16v CRX. And I've had to back off to avoid going into the back of a saloon turbo in my old Civic SiR. As has been said, higher speed, and probably round corners, the Scooby would win, but they aint that quick at lower speeds in a straight line. In my experience that is, and I'm talking about the lower spec turbo models.
And I wouldn't be surprised if the Starlet did keep up with a Scooby. I've held an estate Scooby turbo up to 120mph when we had to back off because of traffic, in my 1.6i 16v CRX. definatly the older 1.6's are as quick - from personal experience, there isnt much that was quicker. However the new 1.8's are (I think) closer to 210bhp as standard and are meant to be as quick as evo's and impreza's in their GTR formGravelBen said:

Fair point about drivetrain losses, it will make a difference but not sure how significant it would be. More than made up for in traction advantage off the line but that may not have been a factor here.I was using 1000kg based on what the previous poster had said. Weights I found now for different years of EP82 GT are 830-860 kg which is significantly lighter and gives PWR around 160 bhp/ton so similar to the bugeye turbo.
Torque to weight is still very much in favour of the scoob, but if the Starlet has shorter gearing that may help with the lack of torque at lower speeds.
Starlet 156 Nm / 830 kg = 188 Nm/ton
Scoob 290 Nm / 1250 kg = 232 Nm/ton

just checked and pre 2001 they were 1260kg and post 2001 1460kg

PMSL.....and the scooby driver was a drunk one armed bankrobber from cleethorpes wearing extra thick NHS glasses. Not even a Civic TypeR is as quick as a standard WRX saloon/wagon....behave!!
