On the M3 last night going home i hit a bump in the road at knots and took off the splitter fot the umpteenth time before I call brian at porscheapart and get the garage to fit yet another has any GT3 owner ran there care without one?
My thought was just a black strip to protect the front PU from grounding (essentaly what the splitter does).
how much downforce does it ad bearing in mind how much it flexes?

Ran mine for quite a while without one including several track days, didn't notice any difference in the handling.
Don't be tempted to get a cheaper motorsport version as these are deeper and come off even easier.

Richard.

Hi richard thanks I have had 2 normal and 2 motorsport all have come off on the road i concider them a concumable but wanted to know if i made a custom one that was flat just as an underside protector what it would do to handling.like you i cant detect much difference in lift on the road may try it on track at the weekend

I asked this on the forum a few weeks ago,a ferry ate mine on the way back from Leman, some one said there was extra down force at speed, not needed for road...I fixed mine only with the screws not the tape, but one corner is being sanded down by road use,so will remove when it looks shite...

Stopping the air flowing under a car give a large reduction in drag. The underside of cars is rarely smooth and slippery, like the top surface.

Until you get to 'ground effect' levels of air flow exclusion, a front air dam/splitter will make very little difference in down force.

In aerodynamic terms, front air dams are a 'free lunch'. There is no downside from using one, except the cost of leaving them on the M3 wink

have done this more times than i care to remember. i think there is an effect on stability at high (autobahn esque) speeds. Also i find the lip a 'consumbable' but it is useful as you can hear / feel it grounding at low speeds on speed bumps etc. which is a good warning that you might be about to ground something more expensive.

I agree ross,it helps me get out the drive...

Really like the RS spoiler cool Does it bolt straight onto the Mk2 engine cover?

As for the lip spoiler - took me less than a week of ownership to partlially remove it boxedin

I haven't had one on mine for the last two years and the car is perfectly stable at ALL speeds.

If you don't use the tape as well as the clips it won't last nearly as long. Mine kept coming off with just screws and the alternative push in clips (which are much easier). I then taped it and it has stayed on for 18 months despite getting bashed as much as before. In fact its quite a lot higher now as it has been sanded down by the road quite comprehensively - all without falling off.

Cool, thats good to know.

Thinking about the ram air domes from the RS as well as the wing - I think that the CF will look rather natty against basalt black paintowrk. Oh then maybe the Cup brake ducts to keep the PCCBs cool and maybe an RS front PU, and there you go - one chaved up GT3 woohoo

It seems to be that time of the year. I lost my 2nd splitter in 9 months last night on the M6 Toll Road. For anyone interested, it's in a field about 1/2 a mile from junction T4. That's about as far as I could throw the fecking thing!

Wrapped under the car as about 3/4 of it came off. Pulled it off and threw it away in disgust. I remeber catching it leaving a garage on Monday night, and then rode it over a kerb yesterday morning, which I think is were the damage was done.

A few leptons and some wind did the rest. Into my OPC tomorrow for a new one!
