Can anyone help with this problem?
Have recently purchased a VW passat 130 pd sport on a 51 plate, it came with a very noisey tick over, i was informed this was a faulty auxilery belt tensioner/idler.
Had a mechanic friend fit a new one, including a new pulley and it solved the problem (very quiet and sounded just how it should). He did however, notice the damper he removed was new and only recently replaced!
3-4 days down the line its started to do exactly the same, progressivly getting worse.
The car has full service history and is very tidy. Just recently had all new belts (genuine) which are all fitted correctly.
What can be causing this tensioner damper to keep failing? or is it just umbelievable bad luck with new parts!
Any help or tips would be appreciated...
Regards Jimmer

Have a close look at the alternator pulley. Some of these have a freewheeling design, that often fails, leading to excessive noise. You have probably fixed a symptom rather than the cause. If not this, look at the crank pulley, as the harmonic balancer can delaminate as well.
