Evening everyone,

Been through a lot of past threads on this subject but couldn't find an answer to a particular problem that I am facing. Picked my Tam up less than a week ago and couple of niggles although nothing major. Small oil leak from the front which the dealer is looking at at the weekend. Slightly more worrying is the fact that the speedo has been reading zero since day 2. How long could the previous owner have been reunning her with no speedo? Guess how long is a piece of string?

confused

Speed sensor is a faily cheap / quick thing to replace, and is a common fault, your comparison to a piece of string is acurate, though perhaps you can compare current millage to that of the service book to assist? it's hard to drive any car @ speed limits when you can't see what speed your doing, add to that the car type (fast anyhow) and I would think it's fairly hard to drive it for any extended period without one and keep a license, I suppose you could use one of the gps devices, but would be a pain too.
edit, did not mean to quote you smile

This is going to be controversial but what the hell.

I'm very suspicious that there are a lot of Sp6 owners who are disconnecting the speedo sensor circuit and using portable sat nav units for speedo readout.

They do this to keep the mileometer reading low for resale as there is a perception that the engines fall to pieces after 20k. Also, they are delaying servicing and keeping their costs down.

What they are doing is fooling themselves and damaging both their cars and the marque. There's no way that a car abused in such a fashion will last as long as a genuine vehicle properly looked after.

I suspect that your non-reading speedo problem could be rectified in literally 15 seconds by those who know where the sensor plug is located.

Incidentially, the reason that I know where mine is is that my car came back from a dealer service with the previously fully glued dowm and undisturbed 'covering' very obviously ripped away and an intermittent speedo fault. Yes - the mother@@@@ers had been driving my car around with the speedo disconnected and not put the plug back properly.

They will never see that or any of my future TVRs again.

Hopefully problem will be sorted this w'end...

Slightly worrying that any normal human being, let alone self-respecting TVR owner would do such a thing.

Tried sending an email to m@@@@@kers to express my anger to the way they treated your P&J .... bounced back... guess it's not a proper email address??wink

Looks nice in Laser blue btw - mine's Montreal.

rfisher - although it is easy to do, I do not know of any Speed Six owners who run their cars on GPS only with the odo disconnected. Please do not start a rumour.

My car will probably only do around 2,000 miles this year - after doing 7,000, then 5,000, then 2,000 in the previous years. Have I disconnected the odo? No, I travel heckuva lot on business and the car is getting much less use as a result. I'd rather people didn't suspect me of fraud.

To the original poster - I wouldn't worry about it, car may have done 100 miles or 10,000 miles - you have no evidence either way. Personally I'd always be more worried about a car from a non-TVR specialist where it may have been ragged from cold by the whole staff. 5 miles of that is worse than 1,000 miles of careful driving. The sensor is an easy fix (newer part is more reliable).

I would be extremely suprised if more than the odd rogue had attempted this trick (disconnecting speedo). It is not something that I can see the typical TVR owner doing and bearing in mind the low average mileage of these cars why bother? As mentioned, service history states mileage and would be a giveaway of any such unscrupulous practice.

It's a lot easier to do that "disconnecting a circuit" and I do know a couple of people who've done it! But after 6000 miles it's obvious the car's in need of service so not too sure what it buys you in the long run. Maybe a few 1000 miles between a service and selling...

Don't know about 350s and Sags but in a Tamora it's easy to see if the covering has been disturbed.

If I was looking at buying a used Tam that would be the first thing I'd look at.

If the cover had been disturbed I'd want to know why.

After a few minutes chatting with sellers it usually becomes fairly obvious who the rascals are and which ones are genuinely potty about their car and would sell their family to keep it!

Most of the Tiv owners that I've met fall into the latter category BTW wink.

She's a beast! Absolutely loving it... always dreamed that driving a TVR would be fantastic - what an understatement. I was considering the t350 but so glad that I went for the Tam now - the noise with the top down in tunnels is incredible!

Checked the mileage and the previous owner looks like he got bored of it after the first 18 months... All fully serviced/stamped though... I'm sure it is fine and having bought it from a reputable dealer kinda puts my mind at ease... cloud9
