Saw an R1 today, thought it sounded 'fruity' so when I caught up with it I was looking for the exhaust can (as you do), there was none scratchchin just been taken off and only had the downpipe (with clamp still fitted) exiting just under the riders foot.

To be honest it was no louder than many race cans, certainly a cheap way of doing it. Less is more? might be 'interesting' if it backfired..... yikes

Removing the can completely will affect performance-should actually reduce acceleation, an aftermarket can may be loud,
but no can is asking to be pulled over and you'd probably get done for it

Riding a bike without a silencer sounds like a good way of damaging the engine badly, i think it would look stupid too.

I always thought no end can would kill the performance.

But at Woodbridge last year , a guy with a zx12 tried both with and without , and gained a couple of mph without.

He spent the next 2 days launching it without a can , it made my ears hurt as i started him

Its not all down to silencing with the can.. There is the tuned length of the exhaust system to take into account.
You run the risk of screwing up the fuelling, especially on carb fed bikes or early less 'adaptive' fuel injection.

I love a loud bike but there is nice loud and then there is awful nasty harsh loud.. Plus you want the noise exiting behind you as much as possible unless you are a total masachist.

Believe me, my exhuast on my little gpz commuter is on its way out and i have a split on one pipe at the link between downpipe and system. Yep its loud but ooooooo it sounds nasty!! hehe
