Sometimes on my E36 coupe the boot doesn't lock on the central locking. Seems pretty intermittent. Is this a common problem?

Check the wiring near the boot hinge where it goes through the rubber grommet it is common for the wiring to break and short out.

Sorry to drag this up again.

Had a good look at the the wiring between boot and body as per fixedwheelnut's suggestion and all seems well. I then wondered if it was something that was switchable on the alarm so I dug out the manual. It doesn't cover the alarm/locking system in much detail but there is a passage that says something along the line of the central locking not operating the "luggage compartment" which must be opened with the key. Anybody able to confirm/deny this?
