Is it normal for a new A3 to always have the passenger door locked? It seems the only way you can open it is from the inside or by holding down the unlock button on the key fob while pulling the handle. I've only had the car since Wendesday but it's already annoying the hell out of me, each time I go round there from the drivers side or pick up a passenger it's a pain.

try pressing the fob - once for just the drivers door unlock, twice for the all the rest of the doors including boot unlock, see if that works?

What Nobbles said, I had a courtesy car from a garage and it was like that, mine isn't and I wouldn't want it to be but it is a feature like automatic locking (when you start to move) that can be programmed by the dealer (or aftermarket software).
