Fuel Tank 'burping'
Discussion
Was stuck on the M1 today in the griff, pulled off at hemel and went to fuel up at the Tesco near the junction, opened the fuel cap and the tank 'burped' clearly under pressure, and the vapours could be seen coming out of the tank through the filler pipe, decided best not to fire up a cigar at that point, let it vent a bit, then filled up, got home in SE London and could hear the tank 'burping' as the metal seemed to expand/contract, and strong smell of fuel in cabin
anyone had this if so what did you do about it?

help, cannot remove the fuel cap, vacumn seems to be holding it in, not sure if to force, try to drill small hole to vent (that worries me a bit because of the fuel vapour and possibility of a spark, or if other ideas? Possible need to find if a carbon container fitted, but have a 94 500, and my understanding is these were not fitted until later models, so not sure if one fitted, althouh there is a pipe coming off the inlet pipe, just inside the boot under the filler cap, which disapears down beind the tank, have a all cap so nice and firm, probably why vacumn built up in first place,
Undo the jubilee clip to the tank filler rubber hose in the boot, and prise the rubber enough to release the vacuum.
I'd look at the carbon canister end, just unclip the vent pipe and check it is not blocked (trapped pipe). No problem to run for a while with the pipe vented to air I reckon.
AFIK only the pre-cats may not have had carbon cannisters

Many thanks for your advice, I couldnt easily access the jubilee clip on the breather pipe so ended up undoing the two jubilee clips on the that hold in the filler unit, turns out its a case of cross threading the cap, now need to get the unit into a vice or something and get the cap off, still sticking fast, but still think I need to get the carbon container checked though
many thanks Phil, great idea, prompted my memory, couple of years back I bought a tool, similar to the oil filetr remover, so dug it out, discovered two in the pack, so used to great effect, now cap back off, didnt need a vice after all so happy bear, but still need to get it checked out though, just in case the carbon cannister or line is blocked
