Hi,
yes they are prone to failure. I got one from a TVR dealer to ensure it was the right one for the gaugue. TVR Carparts and other reputable suppliers should be able to help also. But worth cleaning the connector to the sender and ensure its a tight fit first, its not uncommon for a poor connection to give strange gauge readings.

As Ozstyle says, its worth checking it to make sure you've got a clean contact.
If you pull off the OSF wheel you can get to it reasonably easily.
Here's the one I took off. You can see the glue which should have been holding the post and which had failed. The post then moved around and eventually broke the wire connecting it to the internals of the sender.
If yours is the same type be careful undoing the nut to take the wire off. They can be damaged just by doing that and you don't want to find you've damaged the sender when the problem was an iffy wire or dirty contact.
