Test drove a Griff today and noted that there was a slight lumpiness just above tickover and slight hessitation beyond 4.5k revs. What are the likley causes? Agreed in principleto buy the car and seller is including a 12K service. But the service may not cure the problem!
Also withn the engine running on tickover, when listening with my head at ground level there is some sought of knocking noise, but where from I cannot detect. Could this be a worn gearbox input shat?

Hi,

it could a whole variety of reasons. With out knowing any history, lumpy idle and hesitation above 4.5k revs could point to a worn camshaft. Knocking at idle around the engine - worn bottom end? Could see what the service does, and if no better walk away if you do not feel right. You could always get an inspection done by an experienced mechanic.

Thanks Ozstyle, the camshaft and followers were replaced around 15K miles ago and the bottom done more recent to that. Has good oil pressure and no smoke from exhaust Could it be the valves or even something more simple like an electrical fault or even the lambda sensors. Could the bottom end noise be the gearbox input shaft?

Get the vendor to fix the problems before you buy, or get an expert to inspect it so you know what problems you're taking on. Definitely *don't* be tempted to buy it in the hope that it's something minor.

The owner has agreed to book the Griff. in for a 12K service at Peninsula. (they have serviced the car and carried out the bottom end work etc during the past year). Should I ask them to do an independent inspection on my behalf or ask someone else. Anyone known near Exeter. I don't want a full inspection as am happy with other aspects good or bad but I feel the need for expert advice on the issues mentioned.

Dulfords are just up the road from Peninsula.I'm sure Richard would have a look around it for you.He may even know the car.
Dulfords No.is 01884 266675 or 01884 266755.That Tuscan you were looking at in Peninsula is still going strong.Glad you're over the BMWZ3 thing aswell.
Good luck!!

Dulfords picked up on major engines faults I had that were missed in a 12k service by the "other" local specialist. I would highly recommend Dulfords.
