I understand that some people are luckier than others but i'd appreciate you thoughts on the following.

one of my members of staff bought a 96/N narrow body C4 Cpe from me last year that came in part exchange. IMO a good little car for someone looking to treat themselves with a weekend toy on a £15k budget. it has the performance and the badge to make you feel good about yourself when your driving it. i told him when he bought it that i expected him to keep it and not sell it on straight away for a profit. He did as i ask and a year later he's ready to have a change and once again treat himself. this is a person that day to day gets to drive BMW's upto £40k-£50k without even needing to ask; but he's still driven to have that special something in the garage for the weekend. I no longer work with him directly but on a visit to the dealership today i noticed a screen saver with a 328gts on it. I knew straight away what he was up to!!! he told me that may be my new purchase and he also showed me a white 348 on ebay he was bidding on.

i asked why he wanted either of those and he said 'i think they look great'. i then asked would he be dissapointed if it was less enjoyable to drive than the 993, he didn't understand why i asked the question.

So my question to you all is that what's more important:

1. A badge that makes you think that 'i've done it, i own a ferrari'
2. I've got a toy in the garage (regardless what it is and how much it cost)that makes me feel great every time i drive it.
3. never comprimise and only get what you've always once you can afford it.

i personally feel that option 2 would be the way i'd go.

sorry if the spelling is terrible but it's early and i've had a few.

IMHO if you buy something for the 'right' badge, you're a c0ck, pure and simple.

Then I'd guess it's a trade off between 2) and 3). For me it's usually 3) as I'd always be wondering what the thing I should have saved for is like, so taking the edge off anything I owned in case 2).

I agree with Phil, 3 would be the best option but only if it's a possibility. What I mean is that for many people, owning what they've always wanted is not a true possibility, in which case option 2 would be the more realistic one. Last year when I decided to sell my Corvette I had a decision to make: my ultimate dream car of all time has always been the Countach. I don't have the sort of income that means I can simply pay to have a professional do anything it might need, so I will have to do as much of the work on it as I can. I can and will do servicing, brakes, electrics etc. etc.
The decision I had to make was whether to go for my ultimate car and accept that parts and the like will cost a bomb, or to spend a similar amount on a car that is unlikely to give trouble and is easier and cheaper to fix if it did. I looked at the Viper SRT/10, a C5 Corvette Z06, a C6 Corvette Z06, an Ultima etc. All great cars IMHO, but nothing pushes my buttons like a Countach, and I knew that if I didn't take the opportunity now then I never would. So I took the risk and got the Countach, and so far I'm very glad I did. The badge has absolutely nothing to do with it for me. So I took option 3. If my dream car was a Murci then I would have taken option 2, as there is no way I could contemplate affording a Murci for a very long time - assuming they ever come down to what I could afford anyway. Hope that all makes sense confused

What makes you think either would be less enjoyable to drive than a 993?

There are many ways a drive can be enjoyable, and both the F-cars mentioned will be very enjoyable in their own right.

Note that this is not dissing the 993. Great cars. Might well own one one day. But whether either F-car is quicker (depending on which 993 you're talking) is besides the point. They will be fun drives.

Surely you buy Italian machinery for heart reasons rather than head reason? They have character and passion. And AFAIK they all handle well, even the 348 (just less so).

Guys

If he needs to ask those 3 questions then he doesn't understand and probably never will.

Nothing scratches my itch like Italian sports cars but buying anything because of the badge or label is simply behaving a tit.

hope this helps
