Otter switches
Discussion
I personally would fit the standard one that is 87-92 and also fit a Mod wise device. This temperature sensor allow you to control the temperature your fans come on. That way you only need to fit one otter and depending on the time of year or conditions you are in, you make your adjustments on the Modwise kit.

Assuming your otter switch is in its original location (either in the swirl tank in line with the top hose, or in the 'hot' end tank of the radiator) then you must ensure that the otter switch 'on' temperature is higher than the stat opening temperature. (The bottom hose is a far better place for the otter switch to be fitted, but that's another story.)
It also depends on what target engine temp you desire, I try & run mine at 80, you don't have to use 90 as the target temp, anything above 70 is ok I believe. In general I think it is better to run the fans for longer, rather than keep having them cut in & out too frequently. As Peter mentions, control via the cool side of the rad is much better (avoids the spits of hot coolant on throttle blips). The early 74c stat is also fine for summer use.

Just to reiterate: when you're thinking about changing thermostat and otter switch ratings, when the otter switch is in the top hose you need to ensure that the otter switch 'on' temperature is ABOVE the stat temperature. Otherwise your fans will stay on far too much of the time. IMO the system should be capable of holding its temperature. Fitting lower temp components to try to cure a perceived overheating problem is a temporary bandaid not a cure.

80 does seem to be the 'natural' crusing temp, fans can get it down to 75 in hot jams (like Monza) but they only tend to fire up just before the temp gauge reaches 90.
