Had a collision yesterday which the insurance broker (large motoring org) said over the phone was 'more than likely' not my fault. They then went on to offer me two possible routes of claim;

1) go through the insurance company - claim - repair - lose excess
2) go through http://www.helphire.co.uk/index.htm  - claim - repair - and recover the excess

As I've only had one other accident I don't really understand the losing the excess bit? I thought if it wasn't your fault then the insurance company recovered all the losses, including the excess?

Please could the knowledgeable ones here guide me on this? Where do I stand with regard to the excess and how is that affected by wanting to send it to BMW for repair? - said customer service op was unsure that route 2) was available doing that.

mods - sorry if this is the wrong section - wasn't sure where to put it

Did you get the details of the other party? If so ring their insurance company and go from there.

Yes, got all the details - that's not an issue, I just find it strange that I'm told I will lose my excess by going through the insurance company....?

I have had two claims in the last 4 years for damage which was not my fault.
1. In France when someone went into my side
2. parked up and transit hit wheel

Both times claimed through insurance and although had to initially pay the excess when repairs
done, this was then refunded by ins. co. when they claimed of other drivers ins.

A

p.s. one was aa renowned motoring assistance co. and one was through a pretty Direct co.

Think about it from *their* point of view, they gave you two options:

1) They have to do all the chasing and sort out your claim - and will also recover your excess from the other party.
2) They dont have to do **** all.

You can see why they want you to look at 2)!

That said though, I would recommend using a third party company to navigate the routes of solicitors etc, especially if you have legal cover.

The claims departments of at least one company is so disorganised, unknowledgable and generally unhelpful that the least time you have to spend wasted the better!

Yes - unfortunately the other accident I had resulted in a major scepticism of large insurance companies especially those advertised by micheal winner....furious

Anniesdad is a very useful person. Unfortunately I discovered him too late in my claim, but he still took his time to explain things to me.

Very useful - Thanks Steve!

He's just called me to explain the full facts around all the concerns I have. I think I know what I'm going to tell my broker!

yes

The couple of times someone has crashed into me (rear ended so no argument on fault) I simply phoned the claims department of thier insurance co. gave em thier policy number, explained I was the 3rd party and my car needed fixing and they sorted the lot.
